Blackhawks may need more from Toews

08:25 AM ET 07.22 | What else can Jonathan Toews do? He owns a Stanley Cup ring, a Conn Smythe Trophy and an Olympic gold medal -- not bad for a 22-year-old. But with much of the Hawks' depth shredded by the salary cap, Chicago needs its captain to become more than a 25-goal, 70-point performer. Toews' 29 points in 22 playoff games show he has more offensive upside than he's demonstrated so far, and the Hawks need him to produce those kinds of numbers over a full regular season.

I think he is capable of putting up bigger numbers and I honostly think he will. I see him being a 30 55 85 king of guy. He's 22 years old and he is only going to get better. The guy's got loads of talent.

July 22, 2010  09:22 AM ET

It will remain to be seen. Considering what's left, he isn't going to have much of a choice.

July 22, 2010  09:23 AM ET

The kid's awesome but he needs to lighten up. He smiles less than Mel Gibson's pubilicist.

July 22, 2010  09:50 AM ET

The kid just one the Cup, let him enjoy it.

I like to compare him to Bryan Trottier. All around player, leader, etc.

But the league has changed and he'll never get Trottieresque point totals. And he doesn't have a Bossy on his flank..

Good comparison, except I think I saw Trottier smile once! :)

Geez...he's what 21-22 years old? Give me a break....he is the perfect Ying to Kane's Yang....and most likeley will have Brower on that first line...he will be fine...only get better and stronger. It's going to be interesting to see them with actual tough guys...Beach is a psycho and that new defenseman had like 2 points and 8000 penalty minutes.....go ahead and mess with Kane, Towes or Hossa....Bieksa or one of them punks take a run and they will pay now.

Break from what? Nobody is blasting the guy. One said he thinks he should be putting up better #'s ( not exactly untrue) and smile( 100% true), other than that what do we need to give the kid a break from?

His Cup winning parties?
His Conn Smythe win?
Maybe the Limpic Gold?

Its all offensive upside for this guy.One qualifier- recently my daughter called me to the TV saying" that Canadien guy from the Olympics is on Dad !"- He was on some horrible music video awards show-can you say awkward, fish out of water,or bad idea overall ? That was so terrible only scary Gary could have set it up.Stick to Hockey stuff and all will be well Mr Toews

Except when they play the Rangers, as The Boogieman will pummel anyone on Chicago! I'm not a Rangers fan, but I like how men buckle from a punch from this mammoth cage fighter on skates! Let's see what happens when Beach vs Boogieman gets underway, and see if he'll pay!

July 22, 2010  11:23 AM ET

Ridiculous article!! Ya maybe he could muster a few more points here and there if he wasnt so exhausted working his bag off devensively. The kid plays two way hockey and you can throw him out there in ANY situation................... You cant say the same more most of those guys who finish ahead of him in points at the end of the regular season.

July 22, 2010  11:35 AM ET

With all the moves the big names like Kane, toews, and Hossa will need to step up. One player does not win championships teams do.

July 22, 2010  11:35 AM ET

It's not ridiculous, he will have to do more. The 'Hawks dumped like half their roster. At the same time Kane, et al will need to do more as well.

Wasn't there a Beach story here recently, and wasn't he beating up some guy quite a bit smaller than him?

A perfect segue into a thumping from my man Boogard.

It makes me think of Calgary revving up for the playoffs one year and a meeting with Deadmonton and Dave Brown (my favourite all time knuckle dragger). They brought in none other than the Grim Reaper himself, Stu Grimson (and one other fellow I can't recall).

First meeting between Brown and Grimson was about a 2 hitter. Brown slowly let a decidedly limp Grimson drop gently to the ice....

I remember that, and enjoyed Browns abilities at protecting his fellow teamates, and Stu Grimson, was o.k, but not as tough as his name sounds, and that's why Boogieman fits soooo nice.

I do miss watching Probert, as I liked the way it looked when he punched, as you would think he was grabbing ice to throw with every punch.

R.I.P gatherer of fighting majors!

I remember Don Cherry one night was told by McLean that some player didn't like what Don had said about him on a previous episode. Don responded by saying, "I'm not afraid of him, I've got Dave Brown's picture in my wallet....."

My favourite pure puncher was Wendell Clark. If you fought him you bled, you might win but you bled...

Do you refer to the all time original "Lummox' Nick Fotiu Hank ??? The guy could not skate, pass,or fight????

Well, yeah but ... it's hard to score more when you are carrying a bunch of your team mates on your back. Give the kid a break! He's only 22 and already playing well beyond his years!

More goals. He can be a 40 goal scorer easily.
