07:22 AM ET 07.23 | Would the Yankees change their minds for a Cy Young winner? According to several baseball executives the Royals haven't told other clubs there are any untouchables on their roster. "They will listen on all of them," an NL source said yesterday, 10 days from the July 31 trading deadline. Even ace hurler Zach Greinke which could make the Yankees rethink their stance about having enough pitching to cover Andy Pettitte's groin problem. ... The Yankees, who beat the Royals 10-4 last night at the Stadium, say they aren't in the market for a starter, but Greinke is in the same small and elite class as Cliff Lee and the Yankees believed they had the talented lefty from the Mariners.

Grienke is an outstanding pitcher. That said New York's a difficult place to pitch for various reasons. Not sure that's a good fit.

QUOTE(#2):

I agree....he's a very good pitcher but I dont think he's a good fit for NY. But you never know until he plays there.

True, but that would be an expensive leap of faith for the Yankees as well as a bit more pressure than seems good for Grienke. He would dominate NL lineups, much like Santana, Sabathia (did) and Halladay. That's a better fit me thinks.

I think Greinke is under contract for at least 2-3 more years. Why they would trade him is anyone's guess. But you better be ready to empty out the prospect barrel and throw in a couple quality starters in order to get him

Didn't Grienke miss time because of social anxiety issues?...playing in Kansas City. How would he do with his mug plastered all over the back page of the NY Times and the pressure of winning the Series every year?

True, and why do that when Lee will be FA next year?

Good pitching is alwaus a good fit for NY. Unless the arm comes with a headcase.

Guy just needs a little pharmaceutical adjustment, isn't that what they do with everyone nowadays.

Right. I for one am tired of hearing about his "potential". He is not mentally tough enough to be an ace anywhere, let alone in a major market. If he went to NY he would be a 3 behind Sabathia and Petitte (if healthy).

Tonight is Greinke's tryout for the Yankees

The Royals are paying him $7.25 mil this year. The next two years of the contract are in excess of $13 mil.

Layup anyone?

I think it would be an unmitigated disaster.

lmao. you, sir get a gold star for that one.

July 23, 2010  10:25 AM ET

Awful fit, he would be better off on a contender in a smaller market with less pressure, Tampa, Minnesota or Texas

Yea, because we all know that NL teams never win a World Series.........

I know because playing in that bandbox with the Little League dimensions down the line would be a nightmare for any pitcher!

the HRs are way down this year, aren't they? who knows...anyway...if the yanks didn't give up prospects to get Lee, who is a top 5 pitcher in the league, they certainly aren't going to give them up for Grienke, who is decent, but inconsistent...and while i'm sorry he has mental problems (who doesn't) he should stay the hell away from NY unless he is visiting to catch a show and have a slice of pizza from Ray's Famous

I found it very strange that a ball player would take time off for social anxiety issues.

Apparently criticizing the Yankees is worthy of comment deletion.
I'd guess commenting on that fact is as well but I'll take my chances.

Back to the topic at hand, Greinke just doesn't need to be in NY.
I doubt he'd even want to be. It would be no real surprise if he left KC in a couple of years (i.e. the season before his contract expires) but I doubt he'd want the hassle of New York. Heck, it was reported that he didn't even like his name being mentioned during the Cy Young race last year so attention, spotlights, etc. are not his bag. As a Royals fan, I would love to have him for his entire career but I wouldn't hate him if he wants to mobe one. I just hope that if/when he does, he'll go to a competetive team that doesn't have a ravenous media associated with it.
