The case for keeping Iguodala

07:25 AM ET 07.23 | Sounds as if, while reports suggest the Clippers are looking at Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia's head coach would prefer to hold on to the swingman. A trade of Iguodala now doesn't seem to jive with what new coach Doug Collins has been saying since his May hiring, which is that he is looking forward to coaching Iguodala and it is his belief that the 6-7 Arizona product can be one of the best defensive players in the league. "I think this summer is such a great thing for his career," said Collins [Thursday] morning while on his way to the airport to catch a flight to Las Vegas to watch Iguodala practice with Team USA. "I'm very excited about being his coach. We need him for the type of defensive team we want to be. I think he can be the best defensive player at his position in the league."

Sure he can improve his defense but to ask him to be the best defensive player at his position is insulting. Only scrubs aspire to be the best at doing dirty work. Star players need to score and score more. AI is an athletic freak who can score in multiple ways. A good coach will make him use his natural ability to help the team - not the other way round. Don't get it twisted DC... alienating your star players is recipe for disaster.

unless Turner really shows something this year at best this team is looking at 7/8th seed for the playoffs and even that's a real stretch, they're stuck in nba mediocrity with bad contracts. what i'm getting at is that although Iggy is a real good player he's had plenty of time to show he can't really lift a team so they should look for the best deal to add young guys and ship out payroll

andre iguodala, is that you?

when you are out on the court, roughly half of your time is spent playing defense.

where did you get the absurd notion that 'star players' should be insulted at the suggestion of playing defense to the best of their abilities?

Bill Russell was best known for his Defense, what a scrub he was!

I think he can be one of the best defensive players at his position maybe not the best but at least in the top 5. If they want him to be better defensively, some workload has to be taken on the other side of the court and right now as some of you have mentioned Iggy doesn't have that much help.

Defense wins titles, Bro.

What are the Clippers offering?

andre does alot of things well, but he's overvalued, imo.

he quit on the team last year (he wasn't alone in that).
he doesn't have a consistent outside shot.
he doesn't make good decisions with the ball.
he doesn't shoot important free throws well.

that being said, i hope the sixers are listening to offers...

The case for keeping Iguodala is his bloated contract. It's awfully hard to move a guy that doesn't play to the level of his all-star contract. The only person that believes Iguodala could be the face of a team is Iguodala himself.

This team is in a bad way. It's time to start over in Evan Turner's image.

Clippers looking at Iggy is a non-story. The Clips biggest need is at SF, and they're most likely looking at every teams player(s) at that position. Vince Carter can score a lot of points- but can't play a lick of defense.

(hopelessly wishing) It'd would be nice to see iggy where Vince Carter is....Orlando has more than enough shooters to compensate for AI's outside weakness (Lewis Nelson Reddick) would make for an interesting ORL CHi series.....

Agreed...

I just checked last years stats and Iggy is the Best Player on the team... By far.

He led the team in scoring (on a team where Iverson & Brand are in the top 5 of PPG) and Assists...

Turner should help - but there are gonna be some thin times in Philly.

And both the Phillies and Flyers ended up "just short"... Something Philly Fans are used to...

The 76'ers aren't going anywhere fast
Eagles just went into instant rebuilding mode...
Phillies are in the tank.
And if the Flyers can finally get a Goalie to stay healthy - I'd give them the best shot to do something - but they ditched Gagne...

Like I said... Thin times.

AI is a baller. Philly has misused him for the duration of his career. Now, they draft another player that, basically, is the same player without the athleticism. I think both Philly and AI need a fresh start.

Time to part ways.

you're saying that if you take away the accomplishments of the successful (relatively) sports teams in philly this year, the remainder would be disappointing?

hahahahaha... thanks, captain obvious!

p.s. - mcnabb gone is a good thing and westbrook was awesome, but he couldn't stay on the field.
