08:23 AM ET 07.23 | Few in this country can match the hours Art Berglund, who will be inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, has devoted to Team USA, and he can look back at its progress. "We don't have to expect miracles anymore," Berglund said of the United States' standing in international competition. "We were the underdogs to the Great Russian Bear 30 years ago. But today, we have a quality program, with depth and a lot of high-end players." Berglund's thoughts often go back to the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. Only people such as Berglund could fully appreciate the enormous accomplishment of that group of U.S. players bonding together to defeat the best hockey players in the world. "In 1976, our Olympic program was run out of a shoe box in coach Herb Brooks' garage," Berglund said. "Winning the gold medal in 1980 is considered the greatest moment in American sports history."

Herb Brooks! It seems he was born to accomplish the impossible: To hand the mighty Red Army their most humiliating defeat. May he rest in peace!

The story is about the Lake Placid victory in 1980 ... yet the pic is the 1996 World Cup of Hockey win?

Way to go trained monkeys!

I give them credit for getting the right country.

And the right sport.

Biggest upset in the world of sport, ever. Not David beating Goliath. David showing up in a t-shirt and jeans with slingshot and beating Goliath sitting in a tank with a full-body armor.

Forget Villanova beating Georgetown, forget the Giants beating the Patriots or the Patriots beating the Rams, forget the '72 basketball final. If the same two teams play 100 games that winter, the Soviets win 99 of them by an average of 5 goals, minimum. They lost the only one that mattered. A bunch of us watched that game when it aired and boy did we love seeing the Americans sticking it to the Bolsheviks. Uneffingbelievable.

I didn't see the actual game when it aired, but after reading all the details behind it, and hearing all the stories of that year, I have to say that it probably was the biggest upset in hockey history, at least international!

I thought it funny too, that they post a pic of the world cup, and talk about team Miracle! But at least they didn't give a whole bunch of reasons why that game made Kovie's signing that much harder, or mentioned that Madano also played for team U.S.A at a later date, and will probably sign in Detroit as a result! If they had though, it wouldn't have surprised me! lol

... AND the REAL MIRACLE happened twenty ( and thirty-six) years earlier, in 1960 - why does this line persist? USA Hockey is at least in the top six in the World, and always has been - GOOD ON YA - keep up the good work, and save us from the bumpf-meisters.
Begs the question: Why is there an USian HHoF?
