Hawks clear room ... to sign Niemi?

08:30 AM ET 07.23 | Trading Marty Reasoner to the Panthers for Jeff Taffe may keep Antti Niemi on the books. With Reasoner's cap hit of $1.15 million off the books in exchange for a player who spent much of last season in the AHL and is not guaranteed a roster spot, the Hawks have that much more money to spend as they continue negotiations with Niemi. Niemi has an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 29 and the sides could reach an agreement before. If the Hawks determine the cost of Niemi is too steep, they can let the netminder walk as an unrestricted free agent and go in a different direction in goal.

Poor blackhawks. they're losing so much, they might not have a shot to repeat this year.

July 23, 2010  10:13 AM ET

No worries....he should be happy to sign with this team....let's face it he barely beat out Corey Crawford as the back up last year.....if he don't want to play with the defending Cup champions let him go play for Ottawa. He would help them get over the hump.....maybe.

After arbitration let's hope the Hawks are still "Pro" and not "Anti" Niemi.

I was just in a meeting where one of the guys "cleared the room".....

Apparently he had Chinese food for lunch yesterday and followed it up with a lot of beer and salmon for dinner.

They should tap his back passage for natural gas. It was FOUL!!

They don't have a shot. Lucky if they make it out of the first round.

Ha! Harry, try and sneak into the Flames war room just before Sutter gives away another player or extends Jokkinen's contract another 10 years.

No one knows. He filed for arbitration. Nobody can begin to guess what some dopey judge that knows nothing about hockey will award in the end. Just ask Atlanta and Hongcouver.

Probably $3-4 million... I'm sure he will get closer to $3M

The Hawks will let him walk at that price. He'll be a UFA before long if it's in that range.

Asking for $3M-$4M will prob get $2.5-$3M.

It seems to me that in the last couple years the arbitration route has been tilted more towards the players side of the $$ table. No wonder he wants to go that route.

Snotty Stan should offer Niemi a 1 year deal at $2.75M. and let him keep his zamboni driving job for a little extra cash. A year from now the Hawks will know for sure if Niemi is the real deal or just a flash in the pan.

No need for a pipeline with you around.

1st guy: Who is the sexiest woman on earth.

2nd guy: Alberta Pipelini.

1st guy: Alberta Pipelini? Who's she?

2nd guy: I don't know but she made the papers today. See the headline?

"10,000 men Lay Alberta Pipeline"

I know it's old.....

If they can work out a deal with Niemi, the Blackhawks will have retained all of their top tier talent from last year. The only signifcant losses are Ladd and maybe Burrish.

While their depth (which was FAR AND AWAY the best in the league) took a hit, to say that they will be lucky to make it out of the first round is just ridiculous.

Yeah, agreed. That's too much. 2 yrs, 5.25 mil. is what I would offer, and anything more I let him walk.
