Bucks owner's shrewd Yi guarantee

According to a report, Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl, during negotiations with Yi Jianlian, guaranteed that the rookie Chinese power forward will get at least 20 and "possibly" as much as 25 minutes a game his rookie season. But if you look at the average number of minutes other No. 6 draft choices have played in their rookie seasons in recent years, you see that they routinely got more minutes than even the maximum Kohl is said to have pledged. In other words, if Kohl promised Yi playing time, he was promising something Yi likely would get even if there was no promise.

The front line for the Bucks can be really good this year. If Redd is healthy, you have a pretty good team in Milwaukee.

Power forward??? That skinny wimp can't play power forward in the NBA...not with his current body. The Buck's owner is a moron for drafting that project at #6.

September 9, 2007  11:07 AM ET

Take him off the rice and tofu diet and put him on the KFC and pork chop diet and Yi will be a large and in charge. He just need a few years in USA.

September 9, 2007  11:51 AM ET

As tall as Yi is, he should be center. Too thin though even for power forward. Maybe small forward?

September 9, 2007  12:02 PM ET

Weak guarantees like this one are what Yi deserves for holding out. He shouldn't have been guaranteed anything.

September 9, 2007  12:13 PM ET

there are many skinny PF out there people.... Miki Moore, Gasol... you name it

September 9, 2007  03:14 PM ET

Yeah... KFC is the key... you can get the HGH given to the chickens into your body without a trail.

September 9, 2007  03:16 PM ET

On second thought... how come Yao is still skinny after all these years here.

September 9, 2007  03:23 PM ET

I'll need to see the entire study this is based on...

#6 pick in recent years... 1 year, 2 year... 5 years? It only takes one player in one year to skew the results.

what is the average... 26 minutes? That is only 1 minute more that what was guaranteed...

stupid Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel think we're dumb like the people living there?

September 9, 2007  04:19 PM ET

I think Yi should get more than 20-25 min-game because there are very few/no 7 footers out there that are ATHELTIC enough to be a power foreword.

September 9, 2007  09:17 PM ET

Hi wzupdude.

Actually, Yao's handlers are actually monitoring his weight. They wanted to add muscles without adding too much weight.

They want him to be as mobile and not injury prone in the later years due to weight related. Think Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

...And not a huge overweight big guy who has way too much muscle his body (at his age) can handle. Think Shaq.

September 9, 2007  09:19 PM ET

...erratum

They want him to be as mobile and not injury prone in the later years due to weight related ISSUES. Think Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Yi will make it look like it was about minutes, b/c it will then sound like it wasn't about the money, but that is what it really came down to. Yi knew that the guaranteed dollars that he was giving up by sitting out & he might not be drafted nearly as high in the draft next yr, plus he didn't want to disgrace his country either. I say bring over Darko or the next Yao to America, I just hope it doesn't take Yi like 5-7 yrs to reach the level that Yao is finally & that is a joke in its self b/c Yao still doesn't have his lungs well & has more injuries than you can shake a stick at!! The Bucks should check Yi for lead don't want them to get poison by a Chinese spy!! ha.

September 10, 2007  02:43 AM ET

Yeah you right pickin him at number 6 was really bad, he's a bust in the makin, he's too skinny and is know Yao Ming, he's not even bargani however you spell it from the raptors.

September 10, 2007  09:26 AM ET

as surprised as i was with the pick of yi, it wasn't a BAD pick. what we really needed was a guy who can play both shooting guard and point guard but a guy like that (acie law) wasn't a good pick at #6. corey brewer would have been the defensive type we need but with simmons, redd, and mason on the perimeter, he would not have been able to contribute much. brandon wright has the talent to warrant a pick here, but he is basically a power forward, and we already have villanueva who we gave up tj ford for. joakim noah would have been a helpful pick but he too didn't not workout for us and did not want to go to milwaukee. what we really needed is a backup at the forward spots. as for him being too skinny to be an nba player, lets look at the height and weight of the other "bigs" drafted in the first round..

yi jianlian - 7' and 240lbs (sf/pf)

greg oden - 7' and 257lbs (c)
kevin durant - 6'10" and 215lbs (sf)
brandon wright - 6'10" and 200lbs (pf)
joakim noah - 6'11" and 240lbs (pf/c)
spencer hawes - 7' and 244lbs (c)
al horford - 6'10" and 244lbs (pf)
jason smith - 7' and 233lbs (pf/c)
tiago splitter - 6'11" and 240lbs (pf/c)

.. remember the only draft picks with more size are centers, which yi is not. he's bigger than most power forwards he was drafted with, but they can't play small forward when needed like he can. he may never be as good as yao ming, but how many other players that play his position are?

September 10, 2007  11:09 AM ET

Yi will do nothing in the NBA.

September 10, 2007  12:28 PM ET

What position can he REALLY play???? Phunkin that was a really nice post but those other guys got what YI doesnt have.....Athleticism and toughness!!!!! Not the Euro kind of athleticism mand toughness but the real NBA athleticism you know the kind where if somebody hits you in the mouth while driving the lane you wont be scared to do it again that kind!!!!

September 10, 2007  12:33 PM ET

too skinny? the days of over sized and overweight power forwards is done. small ball is in. hello!

September 10, 2007  12:41 PM ET

Stick man Yi will get broken.

September 10, 2007  07:11 PM ET

That's a lot of minutes for "The Chariman".
