The Miami Hurricanes have a quarterback controversy. After their 51-13 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, Coach Randy Shannon said he does not know who will start this week. a decision between Kirby Freeman and Kyle Wright might be made by Tuesday. Freeman started against OU but was relieved in the second quarter after getting just one first down during the first seven possessions.

kyle wright sucks but freeman is worse, besides qb controversy should be the least of their concerns after giving up 51 points.

September 10, 2007  08:44 AM ET

You lost 51-13, you got more problems than just QB. Try fielding a defense, maybe that'll help.

September 10, 2007  09:21 AM ET

Miami is no longer relevant........Thank you Donna Shalala!!!!!!!!!!!

September 10, 2007  10:30 AM ET

Dang QB's giving up 51 pts to OU. Oh wait that was the defense.

September 10, 2007  11:11 AM ET

Do they have a third quarterback? Does Trent Green have any eligability left, he will be available soon.

September 10, 2007  11:13 AM ET

i wanted freeman to begin the season but i think wright looked better on sat.i say go with wright i guess

September 10, 2007  12:17 PM ET

Freeman was horrible Kyle Wright gives them a better chance to win.

September 10, 2007  02:20 PM ET

..dont feel bad cane fans, the Sooners are going to make a lot of teams look like that this year..Dont get me wrong it was great beating the hell out of you guys, and shuting your **** up

September 10, 2007  02:24 PM ET

There is no controversy. Both QB's are bad. However, they could have started Ken Dorsey or Vinny Testeverde or any other great Cane QB and lost on Saturday. O.U. just plain out beat them.

I was skeptical about Sam Bradford but he looks pretty good for O.U. as of right now they should beat Texas.

September 10, 2007  02:28 PM ET

Wright looked better, at least he got a touchdown. Even if it did take six plays to convert on 1st and goal from the 1 yd line.

THE TRUTH, you are a moron, Shalala has nothing to do with it, she was one of the main reasons Randy got the job, it is Coker who ground the program into dirt. He quit recruting blue chip talent from South Florida and let them go elsewhere, period. Butch's talent left and we didn't bring anything in to fill the pipeline. This year's team is still Coker's mess as Randy didn't get in in time..... come next year, and especially '09, once the AMAZING talent Randy has already lined up comes in and develops, we will be back in the big time. But as of now, we simply don't have the talent out there, and it showed Saturday.

It's funny how everyone is now saying "Kirby sucks, Kyle is the right choice", as most of those folks were screaming the exact oppsite for 8 months prior to this weekend. Don't get me wrong, kyle looked MUCH better than Kirby, but Kyle had his chance a year ago and never panned out to be good at all. The problem isn't "which is better" the problem is that NEITHER of them are good, both are mediocre at best. With the two of them under the helm, we will be a subpar team (on Miami standards) all year long. But well said, EJ, it wouldn't have mattered Saturday, as Oklahoma was simply phenomenal!

We just need to recompose ourselves (which I'm sure Randy will do) and get focused on beating A&M and hopefully winning 3 of 4 against FSU/VT/BC/GT, if we can do that we'll still have a strong season and give the oral commits we have reason to stay with the team. If that happens, we'll be back in the BCS spotlight in the next two years, maybe sooner. But this season is going to have more bumps, as we have more question marks than we have answers. We're still a damn good team though, and we can still prove that from here on out. No need to hold our heads low, simply build from this, and I'm sure that's what Randy is harping on

GO CANES!!!

September 10, 2007  03:06 PM ET

Wright is better than Freeman but they are both horrible. Yes, your defense is going to give up 51 points when they have absolutely no confidence in your offense doing anything at all. Not impressed with Shannon or the o-coordinator after the two option calls from 2. Bad, bad, bad quarterbacks, bad, bad, bad, coach. Should have went outside program, they needed a complete change, not a half change.

September 10, 2007  03:10 PM ET

That's like trying to decide who you'd rather kiss, Rosanne or Whoopi Goldberg. You won't win either way.

September 10, 2007  03:15 PM ET

That's WAY off, Kobe, Randy Shannon was ABSOLUTELY the right call for head coach! Not only did he deserve it more than anyone, the primary reason they brought him in was to reclaim the one thing Coker lost most: South Florida recruting... and he is doing that in stunning fashion!!

it is not fair to judge him on this year's team, as he had a matter of weeks before signing day to bring some talent in, and even then he got us in the top 25 by scoring a few big names like Cooper.

Not fair at all to lay ANY of this on Randy, he is able to do nothing but piece together Coker's disaster (ie: lack of talent) right now, that's all he has to work with. Give him til 08 and 09, and you'll see how ridiculous you sound.

Offensive coordinator though, I agree with you. Nix's playcalling Saturday was absolutely atrocious! Lining up in a shotgun for 90% of the game like we're gonna throw all over them when our QBs are terrible and our strength is in our 2 backs makes ZERO SENSE! The RBs were actually gaining good yard in their vertical running, yet we throw on first down and do 5yd back tosses on 3rd and 1 and options on the goal line.... OPTIONS?!?!? I thought we laid the option to rest for good in the 2001 Rose Bowl, and now WE'RE running them?!!? Makes no sense to me! It made my blood boil watching Nix refuse to line up and try to power run early against those boys, as it worked when we did it. Only call I liked all game was the bomb on first down and the fake field goal, the rest was inexplainable!

Nix has some answering to do.... don't blame Randy though, he's already turned this program around, the problem was it is a long road, Coker took us WAY off in the wrong direction. We'll be back.

September 10, 2007  03:16 PM ET

This is what happens when a school is the top talent feeder for the NFL. A vast majority of the players leave Miami after only 2yrs. It's hard to consistently replace players at that rate. It is for any school. There are ebbs and flows for programs and UM is in a down cycle. I would look for them to rebound sooner rather then later. Everyone thought they were done in the late 90's and then they ended up second, first & second. Even those "bad" teams fielded players like Ray Lewis and Edgerrin James to the pros. They'll be back. Sometimes it takes a whoopin to get your pride. back.

September 10, 2007  03:17 PM ET

Plus I believe they have more national titles then any school in the last 25 years.

September 10, 2007  03:21 PM ET

Well said, although Butch was able to bring in talent to replace entire NFL teams departing (ie: Portis/McGahee, Andre Johnson, Winslow, Sean Taylor, Vilma, Wilfork... replacing Edgerrin, Santana Moss/Reggie Wayne, Shockey, Ed Reed, Dan Morgan, and Damion Lewis), the fact is that COKER QUIT BRINGING IN TOP TALENT. There is no other excuse or factor for it. Recruting is a long-haul proposition, and we're seeing the results of Coker being unable to mine SoFla talent and instead reaching out west to bring kids to The U, there's no reason for that!

It takes a while to feel the sting of bad recruiting (which is why Coker started off so hot - Butch's boys - but then our program started going down hill - a lack of talent coming in), and right now we're feeling the brunt of that. On the opposite side of the same coin, however, Randy's recruiting abilties in South Florida, which we are already seeing, will bring the program back to the big time, but it'll take a few years for that to happen, we're just starting the process.

As to the QB... it's a shame Marve got hurt. Not that I woulda expected or wanted him to take the helm now, but it would have been nice to have him get some reps in in blow outs or trash time... now his progress is put back a year, and clearly we need someone ENTIRELY NEW to step in at QB, neither Kirby nor Kyle is the answer. Period.

September 10, 2007  03:23 PM ET

Man you write alot......about a mediocre program....

September 10, 2007  03:37 PM ET

Or like deciding between D. Weatherford or X. Lee.

I know I am being hard on Shannon, and I know the U is gonna be sub par until we find some kind of quarterback. Just think they needed big change after last season. After the first option right, it should have been thrown out of the playbook. After the option left, somebody else should have been calling plays. And I imagine both those plays passed right through Shannons headset. On the quarterbacks its obvious that both of them are more likely to lose a game then even giving them a chance to win. Give somebody else a chance, ANYBODY!!!

September 10, 2007  04:08 PM ET

Look this is just a down period for the U. I think Shannon is going to be fine in the long run. He did put together a solid first recruiting class, and his second one looks like it would be loaded with speed. The problem is that he has 2 mediocre (and I am being nice) QB's. Miami would have lost to O.U. even with a capable QB, but at least they would give Canes fans a positive outlook to the rest of the season.
