08:12 AM ET 07.27 | Rest easy, Longhorns fans. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert is not someone to worry about. This may be his first year starting on the big stage, but when he took over at the national championship game last January, he wowed the nation and things can only go up from there. "We didn't know what would happen to (Gilbert) after the national championship game," Mack Brown said. "He walked right out of there and went back to work. Not much bothers Garrett. He is very confident and level headed. He's got a great presence around him. When he walks in the room, all the kids look and they know he's there." And one more thing: He has a better arm than Colt McCoy.

But Colt had "it." You can't coach that. Let's see how Gilbert does first.

Colt McCoy showed he was a true football player in college. Maybe he doesn't have the top skills, but he has heart. NCAA football is all about perception. Even in the preseason the coaches are looking to get their teams hyped in order to climb the BCS rankings. Give us our GD playoffs!!!

He's gonna be a whipping boy for the big 12 south this year, but if he is as strong as they say, he should be doing great when he is a sophomore. On a side note, I wish they would pick a new name for the Big 12, since there are only 10 teams.

Gilbert is going to be a good QB, but don't you think this writer (article) is exaggerating just a little, when he stated: " he wowed the nation and things can only go up from there". Gilbert stats (15/40, 186 yrds, 4.7 avg, 2 td, 4 int) weren't all that good, in the NC game.

JRM, good comment and I agree with you, I think Gilbert will be a fine QB, and the Longhorns will be one of the top teams in the nation.

I was very impressed by Gilbert coming off the bench in the NCG. Certainly seems to have the tools to keep tex rolling. While McCoy may not possess the arm Gilbert has, the kid was a winner, and a damn good football player.
I think this offseason has taken about 10 JRM. Painful.

FJJ, Gilbert did do a good job for a freshman, while he was in the game and I'm sure he will be a good QB for the rest of his time at Texas.

FJJ, I see where a TE from Gig Harbor, Washington is considering the Longhorns (along with six other schools) and the kid is damn good.
