08:12 AM ET 07.27 | Rest easy, Longhorns fans. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert is not someone to worry about. This may be his first year starting on the big stage, but when he took over at the national championship game last January, he wowed the nation and things can only go up from there. "We didn't know what would happen to (Gilbert) after the national championship game," Mack Brown said. "He walked right out of there and went back to work. Not much bothers Garrett. He is very confident and level headed. He's got a great presence around him. When he walks in the room, all the kids look and they know he's there." And one more thing: He has a better arm than Colt McCoy.

But Colt had "it." You can't coach that. Let's see how Gilbert does first.

Colt McCoy showed he was a true football player in college. Maybe he doesn't have the top skills, but he has heart. NCAA football is all about perception. Even in the preseason the coaches are looking to get their teams hyped in order to climb the BCS rankings. Give us our GD playoffs!!!

He's gonna be a whipping boy for the big 12 south this year, but if he is as strong as they say, he should be doing great when he is a sophomore. On a side note, I wish they would pick a new name for the Big 12, since there are only 10 teams.

Gilbert is going to be a good QB, but don't you think this writer (article) is exaggerating just a little, when he stated: " he wowed the nation and things can only go up from there". Gilbert stats (15/40, 186 yrds, 4.7 avg, 2 td, 4 int) weren't all that good, in the NC game.

I've never heard of the author, Laken Litman. The DMN calls him a "special contributor". He seems to be a tiny bit less then 100% objective. I think highly of a bunch of our new kids, and I'm pretty hopeful for a damn good season, but Litman's level of swagger does seem a bit premature. If we're still undefeated after the Nebraska game, I may start getting a little cockier.

JRM, good comment and I agree with you, I think Gilbert will be a fine QB, and the Longhorns will be one of the top teams in the nation.

I was very impressed by Gilbert coming off the bench in the NCG. Certainly seems to have the tools to keep tex rolling. While McCoy may not possess the arm Gilbert has, the kid was a winner, and a damn good football player.

I think this offseason has taken about 10 JRM. Painful.

I think it was more of a reference to the fact he was within 3 points with 3 minutes to go and driving for the go ahead. You might check out his 3rd quarter stats rather than the entire stat line. Kid made some serious throws during the game, kept them in it in spite of all the rookie mistakes.

FJJ, Gilbert did do a good job for a freshman, while he was in the game and I'm sure he will be a good QB for the rest of his time at Texas.

It's a killer off season too much crap (like Masoli to Ole Miss) and seems to be dragging on forever. But camp starts next week with open practices right around the corner. I usually worry about the QB position for newbies but Gilbert has: NFL pedigree (dad played), won back to back Tx State Championships at LT (35-1), holds state records for completions, pass attempts, yds, td's in a season and career. Great poise under pressure. Has size at 6'4" 225. Strong arm. He was alot like your current guy coming out of HS.If you believe the scouts like Rivals, he's the best QB to come out of Tx since a guy in the mid 90's who played at Austin Westlake. He got hurt his senior year and only received 2 offers. Ended up at Purdue, finished a stellar career there, went to SD in the draft and then ended up playing QB for New Orleans and winning the SB.

Damn, I forgot that Garrett's dad is Gale Gilbert.

and maybe his daddy won't cry and hold him out of the national championship game if he gets a boo boo.

Yeah. It's odd but for some reason there are a number of former NFL players living in Austin and there kids are studs.Cayleb Jones is the next one. His dad is Robert Jones who played LB for Dallas and Miami. Kids a great WR. Garrett's little brother Griffin is a senior TE and will get some offers but probably not from Tx. He's good.

FJJ, I see where a TE from Gig Harbor, Washington is considering the Longhorns (along with six other schools) and the kid is damn good.

Saw it last night. There's a reason the coach is a Nutt.

Stealing laptops might be the new criteria for starting QBs in SEC West. ;)
