Wolverines RB guarantees win over Irish

When Notre Dame comes to Ann Arbor on Saturday, it will be a grim meeting between 0-2 teams. Senior tailback Mike Hart vowed that Michigan will not end up with its first 0-3 start since 1937. ''We're going to win next week,'' Hart said. ''There's no question in my mind. I guarantee we win next week.'' Even though Hart is playing through a thigh bruise, and even though senior quarterback Chad Henne didn't play in the second half because of an injury to his lower left leg that makes him doubtful for the Irish game, Hart was undeterred.

Michigan has the edge in talent and experience, and Notre Dame hasn't looked all that great, but you'd think that after losing to a 1AA team and looking lifeless against Oregon, you'd probably refrain from making any guarantees. I understand he's trying to be a leader and motivate his team, but this may be taking it a step far.

September 10, 2007  06:07 AM ET

Not that I don't think that Michigan will win, I just don't see the point in giving the other team, no matter WHO it is, ANY motivation when you've played as poorly as Michigan has.

September 10, 2007  06:49 AM ET

Yeah, the world has a funny way of putting you in your place when you guarantee anything. Should be a good game to watch now.

September 10, 2007  06:50 AM ET

Notre Dame needs no extra motivation for this weekend's game. We're playing for pride just as UM is. Also, we all hate the Skunkbears with a passion anyway, so playing them in any given year is motivation enough to beat them senseless. That being said, I don't think it will be pretty for my Irish on Saturday....

September 10, 2007  07:19 AM ET

why doesn't Mike Hart just ****. he was so brash and outspoken when the Jim Harbaugh comments came out and look what that did. Guys like Jake Long will just play out the year and hope not to get hurt.

September 10, 2007  08:29 AM ET

False bravado.

September 10, 2007  08:32 AM ET

You should be thrown out of whatever league you are in if you guarantee a win and your team doesn't. That would stop all these stupid guarantees. Hey Hart, look in your own house. Hope you can back up that guarantee with you 2nd string, now starting QB.

September 10, 2007  08:57 AM ET

The last time Notre Dame went into the big house, they knocked Hart outta the game in the first quarter. Now he's already banged up and Zibby, no matter what you think of his coverage skills, will knock the snot outta him. Maybe the 2nd string qb and rb can fulfill his promise, but i doubt it.

September 10, 2007  09:17 AM ET

You're playing Notre Dame.......

September 10, 2007  09:21 AM ET

As a UM fan....Mike don't talk...just don't talk....

September 10, 2007  09:21 AM ET

He had to try something to get them fired up, for the sake of the big 10 I hope it works..

September 10, 2007  09:28 AM ET

That's it............Dig your hole deeper and give the irish fuel to play.

September 10, 2007  09:36 AM ET

Boy,,,,,HE REALLY went out on a limb there....LOL....NDame may be the only team Hart can make that prediction with...I submit and believe this honestly....Appy State would beat NDame and would beat Michigan again....so in the end...MICH vs NDame...who cares....LOL...Watch out though MEEEEchiCant....NDame does have some speed....But one point...who in the HELL saw the MEEEEchiCANT spring game and thought this team was #5 in Div 1? It must have not been the Maize vs Blue...but SLOW vs SLOWER for the spring game....GEEZ on PETE!!!!!

September 10, 2007  09:46 AM ET

At least ND didn't mail it in when they were getting worked on Saturday,.

September 10, 2007  09:47 AM ET

HE GUARANTEED THEY WOULD BEAT APPALACHIAN STATE TOO!!!!!HAHAHAHA LOL ROFL WTF

September 10, 2007  10:00 AM ET

DO_WORK_SON,
You make several good points. So long as he doesn't state the obvious and say, "I'm doing all I can and we will win if someone, anyone steps up and helps me," then I think he has earned the right to mouth off as far as guaranteeing victories. People get carried away with "bulletin board material" anyway. Notre Dame has a whole lot to prove after their first two games, so I really don't think anything Hart can say will really make much of a difference as far as ND is concerned.

September 10, 2007  10:16 AM ET

Mike Hart is doing his best to be a leader. Michigan just needs to hope that they even show up for the game. After losing to App. State and being destroyed by Oregon I wouldn't be making an promises. Check out www.rushfor2000yards.com

ND sucks...michigan sucks....who cares?

September 10, 2007  10:29 AM ET

I can't stand Michigan but I almost feel sorry for them. Hart is just trying to help his team keep their heads up.

September 10, 2007  10:37 AM ET

This'll be a good match-up. This game'll be hard to predit b/c of the rivalry factor and "we're making up lost games" factor also.

This game will garner attention just b/c of the teams' names.

If I had to pick right now, I'd have to go with Michigan. I picked Michigan against Oregon too, but ND doesn't have an option offense. ND did look better against PSU than Michigan did against Oregon.
