A red flag for Strasburg

07:46 AM ET 07.28 | With "impeccable mechanics," why is Stephen Strasburg hurting? "Chances are, it's nothing severe," said a major league medical source who has not worked with Strasburg but is familiar with his circumstances. "A guy that valuable, they might say, 'Wait a minute, hold it.' A regular guy, you give him some anti-inflammatory, have him throw a side in two days and get him out there. This guy, you might wait a month or so." ... The larger concern is what might be causing Strasburg, noted for impeccable mechanics, to suffer the inflammation. The biggest worry is the strain of throwing in the upper 90s, no matter how sound a pitcher's form. "Obviously, there's a reason for this," said the source. "Is he fatigued? There's a lot possible reasons. They are going to have to figure out why he is tight. There's no question it's a red flag."

"Chances are, it's nothing severe". As a Cubs fan this sounds very familiar.

...and after only 9 starts. That would have to be a record. I wish him the best - seems like a good kid.

safety first...you're in last place (go Braves!) you have a number 1 pick in the system, DC is starting to really support the Nats and this kid seems to be the real thing....nothing wrong with planning for tommorrow

i recall reading that the Nats were only going to give him like 64 innings before they shut him down for the year....i'd say he's getting close to that number already.
um, yeah...Nats may be in last place but we (Braves) didn't play like we are in first place last night. Nats put Batista on the mound, who hasn't won a game in two years, and we can't hit the broad side of a freakin' barn.

I can dig it...I too was a child prodigy who's entire life was devoted to one thing and doing that ONE thing well.

I have no doubt that Strasburg is feeling tightness and that the Nats did the right thing by shutting him down. With impeccable mechanics you have to wonder if it might not be the extra weight that this kid is carrying -- like the entire future of baseball in DC. Between the fans, the organization, and baseball as a whole (read Chipper Jones comments about him after the game yesterday), you have to wonder if it is just too much. Then again, it could just tightness.

I think that there is truth to your supposition, by the time kids get to high school a majority of them are focusing on just one sport...maybe they're more fragile because they aren't as athletically well-rounded as they used to be. Remember Wilbur Wood, starting both games of a doubleheader? A guy did that today he'd be on the DL the next day.

Or maybe a little of both (mental pressure AND shoulder tightness)?
btw, what's up with Victorino? saw him limping coming off the field in the 7th while watching the highlights last night.

It was bad enough that ESPN would break down every start of his, now we have to listen to them break down what happened and what it all means. YAK!
