07:49 AM ET 07.28 | Max Talbot chose not to sugar coat his feelings about Alex Ovechkin. "I just hate the guy," Talbot told 105.9 The X on Tuesday as part of some Winter Classic press tours, when asked about Alex Ovechkin. "I can't lie. Sorry. Even moreso for a guy like Ovechkin. Like, seriously. Ok. Yeah. I don't like him." There was lots of laughter through all of this, and the hosts were egging him on, saying "we agree completely" and "don't apologize" and the like. Then they asked Talbot when he realized that his dislike for Ovechkin extended beyond normal, competitive on-ice rivalry. "The first time I met him, actually, when I met him off the ice," Talbot said.

To put the interview in context, Talbot actually called him "a real ****" and said he didn't have an opinion until he actually met him, when what he had been told was confirmed. The interview is online

This is probably the most significant comment I've ever seen about a hockey player in my entire (now rather long) life. Probably knock the war in Afghanistan and the Gulf oil leak off the front pages and get this comment the attention it deserves. I know Ovechkin is probably getting counseling now just to be able to sleep.

What crap.

Great, now all the Pen and Cap fans are gonna come trashing Crosby and Ovechkin.

July 28, 2010  10:19 AM ET

It also was the only reason ESPN even talked about the Winter Classic yesterday/today was because of this comment, and as the old saying goes, "no such thing as bad publicity"

At least the 12 year old fans that spend their entire days online because they aren't in school, or the ones with the maturity of a 12 year old.

It is oddly refreshing. I hate all of the tap dancing that goes on in quotes and stuff.

I hear the delievery truck broke down on the way to delievering the papers for the interns to get their headlines from. So, they got "creative" and just rearranged a few words on previous T&R headlines.

I agree with that. The more I think about it this stuff has really worked for the World Wrestling industry. Throw out some stuff and build up the ticket sales for the next "title" match. Could be a plan. Whatever, I am looking forward to the Winter Classic, for relief from this summer's heat if nothing else!

Yet another good point. I guess I'll have to re-think my initial reaction.

Publicity is good, hence the reason the teams don't care when players mouth off. Also, unlike what some people were saying last night this doesn't compare to the "sloppy seconds" comment by Avery.

Ok cj........................you and Norman have convinced me. I'm headed back for more coffee.

I'm doing that while I watch the 90-91 Cup clincher.

I do appreciate his openess. It is nice to hear it even though i am a caps fan.

My bigger question is:

Is it hate because of a specific act, look, or just the fact he is jealous he is not as talented?

I guess it happened at the NHL awards ceremony when Malkin introduced them. Talbot wouldn't say what specifically, just said what he heard was confirmed.

Enjoy. The only Cup finals I can watch were in '98. And they didn't last long!

I can't imagine that you'd want to watch that game either.

hmmm, im predicting a T & R article about Talbot apoligizing or in some way clarifying that what he said was not meant sound like it did.......sometime in the next week or so.

Or about the NHL giving him a medal for getting people not NHL fans interested in the Winter Classic.

July 28, 2010  10:57 AM ET

Would add some spice to the league if some of the uhhh....Europeans...whatever....started to speak up and get some rivalries and hostility's going on the ice.
