Injury behind Mauer's spotty catching?

08:05 AM ET 07.28 | According to one report last week, there was some concern that Joe Mauer may be ailing more than anyone was willing to let on. Since last Thursday, he has caught only three of the Twins' seven games. Twice he has sat out, and twice he has served as designated hitter. That's not the type of usage we're accustomed to seeing for the former MVP, who -- when healthy -- is typically behind the plate for the vast majority of the Twins' games. To be clear, giving Mauer a break from time to time is necessary. ... But there seems to be a perception that the Twins aren't hurting themselves too much by feeding more and more starts to Drew Butera. That's just not the case. Butera is arguably (maybe not even arguably) the worst hitter in all of the major leagues.

As a Tigers fan I think they should sit him way more often.

Back to the topic, catching in the majors is a demanding job and injuries from wear and tear are going to happen. Mauer is a tough player but if you are the Twins you have to consider moving him to keep his bat in the lineup but also sustaining his career.

Man, that is harsh, even for a reporter.

That was what all the talk was about, before he signed his contract. Catchers just get beat up.

But since he was banging her, and they were getting a divorce, it worked out well for him.

You saw right through that one! Yes, Slinky had just returned from seeing the Rolling Stones during their classic Steel Wheels Tour in 1989, and he was inspired by this little crap dance that Mick did...

I personally think they should probably utilize him much more at DH if they want to extend his career for the full length of that contract. And they definitely need to find a better replacement as the backup C.

I think they have one, I cannot remember his name but when Mauer went on the DL earlier this season they brought someone up and he did really well.

Didn't this guy just go 5-5 with 7 RBI a few games ago? Maybe it's good to get some rest occasionally?

You're right, now that I think about it. I cannot remember his name either and it's not worth my team trying to figure it out.

Either way, something is wrong with Mauer and it's negatively impacting the Twinies.
