08:50 AM ET 07.28 | With veteran Sol Campbell heading towards Newcastle, Arsenal is ready to turn to German international Per Mertesacker to solve its defensive crisis. Manager Arsene Wenger watched the 25-year-old Werder Bremen center back in South Africa and is ready to bid $15 million. Mertesacker has emerged as Arsenal's first choice after Everton rejected two bids -- including a $21 million offer -- for Phil Jagielka. Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is hoping to tie up a deal for Mertesacker with Wenger now desperately short of defensive options.

Another one I don't see happening. Germans tend to be very loyal to the Bundesliga, which would explain why their national team is so strong.

And someone MUST read these posts. Yesterday, I was complaining about not hearing any transfer news on Jozy, and today I log on to find an article full of rumors and speculation for Jozy and a few other American players.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/soccer/07/27/transfer.altidore.ap/in dex.html

I would love to see Jozy go to Ajax and get good playing time. With Jol being stuck there, he could do no worse with a manager of his quality and a club with their kind of infrastructure.

And I am sure those two EPL clubs that weren't mentioned were probably Wolverhampton or Blackpool. I'd rather see Jozy ride the pine and get occasional time at Villareal than see him go through another season like he had last year with Hull.

I hope he learned that lesson. The writing was on the wall right from the get-go... playing time, sure. But everyone knew they were going to play 10 behind the ball and launch long balls to him, which he would be required to maintain possession of back-to-net until everyone else caught up to him... he certainly improved by great strides in that aspect, but it's definitely not ideal for what he excels at... which would be receiving the ball from that holding player and striking it.

Per Mertesacker is a stud! was so instrumental for Germany at the World Cup. I hope Arsenal is ready to start counter attacking there opponents

Mertsacker is worth much more than $15 million.

Not to the English he isn't. But an aging Rio Ferdinand would probably snatch up twice that amount.

And now American midfielder Anton Peterlin is on his way to Plymouth.

Fulham is showing interest in one Josmer Altidore... according to his agent. In addition to Ajax, Besiktas and Fenerbahce. I guess I'll have to wait to see who the full-time Fulham manager is to decide if I like the sound of that or not...

Mac Kanji is now fielding offers from the Premier League as well... Blackpool and Bolton.

The Don is also pushing forward with his idea for NY2... not what I think is the best idea til after RBNY has a dedicated fanbase that fills up their expensive stadium. Let's give others the incentive to invest the same way Red Bull has...

Better be named the **** Cosmos as well...

Kandji.... mmmm. Probably some of his best games of the year during those friendlies. If I were those teams I would have been more impressed by Dane Richards.... oh well... Jozy to Fulham???? Don't they already have an American striker that they'll barely ever use?

Absolute silence from Jay Demerit and his options...
Everton says they made a VERY reasonable offer for Donovan but were rejected by MLS.
Not sure what VERY reasonable means, but rumor has it we're talking 8M.

If Jozy goes to Turkey...... Well, if he thought living in Northern England was culture shock, good luck living in Turkey, Jozy....

Did he say that for real? I just find that amusing coming from a Haitian... one of my good friends is from Flatbush, Brooklyn... whenever we see the Haitians on the North side of the park... it's culture shock for me. They're gonna voodoo me on one of my visits there, I just know it. ;-)

I bet that eyeball still scares people away... he'll probably need a full year of showing it's ok to draw more interest... he should probably take whatever comes his way on a 1-year deal at this point.

I heard 12 on the Donovan front.... I mean, really... 12 the Galaxy turned down? I'd be willing to bet cash money that you could replace Donovan with Ronaldinho for less than half that at this point.

I heard the rejection of 12M was the Man City offer. Everton would only do 8M... Of course this is all rumor because nobody is talking in public about it...

Its hard to imagine Demerit had a cornea transplant. They never really talk about this and how serious the infection was--and how damaged his eye was that he had to have a transplant.... I mean that's serious shet... Hopefully it wasn't his partnership with Bocanegra that scares people....

yes crack open that check book wenger!!! and while youre at it just get rid of bendtner and vela

Article from Soccernet saying Kandji sparked a lot of interest from Tottenham and Spitty. It's amazing how some clubs/coaches dismiss American clubs and talent and then once they get an up close view of what's here, their eyes get opened.

I can't see how Spitty can talk about bringing over anybody given their needs to actually trim their roster down 25. A LOT of players are going to end up on loan or just gettin sold outright.

Let me tell you all something right now- Let Thierry Henry get all the press and media. Blaise N'kufo is the truth. I saw him up-close this weekend at Sounders-Rapids and I can tell you there is no one like him in MLS right now. I saw him lining up on corners next to Conor Casey (say what you want about his skill level but he's a pretty imposing guy by MLS standards) and N'kufo absolutely had his way with him. If Sounders make a run at this point in the season, watch out because N'kufo will be a match-up problem for everybody.

They wanted him last year before settling on Ljungberg... they knew what was up then. He'll be a great addition for sure... and I think he may be the oldest DP to date...

So... anyone else read the new Grant Wahl weekly column? Planet Football? It's right along the same format as Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback (and World Cup edition) blog... he even has a Things I Think style section, the Best XI.... cool.

I just got done reading it. I'm actually looking forward to next week and to see how he does with it.

I might as well read the Wahl article, as not much is going on here, or in the World of soccer apparently (whether that's true or not is another thing)....

Yeah... the Stadium News thread on the DC United section of BS is more active today...

....exactly.

I did find the part about Fergie and Bob Bradley's relationship interesting. Not nearly as interesting as the idea of a Maradona-Mike Tyson reality show, but interesting nonetheless.

They both like red wine.

Y'know, Fergie has a lot of respect for Bob. It is odd. Apparently Bob started talking to Fergie regularly a few years ago and they keep in touch by phone on occasion. Bradley's also been known to seek his council. I think its really unique... Obviously Fergie is vouching for Bob regarding the Fulham job... Omar Hitzfield also spoke very highly of Bradley. This can't all be an accident... And I'm sure Bob isn't paying them to say these nice things. He must be a pretty good manager--for real...
