Mets holding steady at deadline?

07:53 AM ET 07.29 | New York, "just about out on Ted Lilly" and seemingly further from Brett Myers, may pass on deadline dealing. The Mets have talked regularly with the Cubs, but feel that there is not a match because the Mets are not willing to take on most to all of the $4 million-plus Lilly is still owed for this year and give up prospects. As for Myers, the Mets had interest, but they found the Astros almost completely unwilling to engage in serious discussions. Myers and the Astros have a mutual option for $8 million next year, and the Mets official said, "I think Houston wants to bring him back next year." More and more, the Mets are wondering if it is prudent to wait until August to see if they are contenders and then make a trade for a pitcher who gets through waivers, especially since plenty of expensive arms are expected to do so.

I have to question the Mets overall commitment to winning. They made no effort to get Lee or Oswalt, yet they put Ollie Perez back on the team. I can understand not making a move for the sake of making a move (like the Kazmir-Zambrano debacle)....but I can't take them seriously while Ollie is on the roster.

They are a big market orgainization with a small market mentality. They are doomed to fail.

I was listening to the Scott Van Pelt show yesterday and he had Buster Olney on. He put the Mets in a category of teams that make trades just to make them.
Anyone that thinks the bunghole running that team is sane is bigger idiot than Minaya himself

I listened to that too and I've been saying that forever. It's so true, too. They make trades just to make them and make noise. No real point to the trades they make...ever.

They had to put Ollie back in the lineup. Blame the players' union, not the Mets. They don't want him there anymore than any Mets fan out there does. As long as he's healthy, he gets to call the shots. Don't get me wrong ... Minaya's terrible and Manuel is worse. But Ollie being in the rotation isn't either of their faults.

They could dump him and eat the asinine contract Minaya gave him. The Mets have to pay his salary anyway. Why take up a roster spot with someone who hurts your team more than he helps it? Cut your losses and move on!

I have been saying this to people I know for a while. I think the Mets are actually in more financial trouble than they are letting on. Last off season the only move they made was the Jason Bay deal, they came into the season knowing that they had 1 reliable starting pitcher and that was it. The Yankees and Red Sox who are the teams in the same spending bracket as the Mets meanwhile loaded up on pitching so much that they both came into the season with 6 legitimate starters. If the Mets really want to spend like the big boys they have to do it every year. There is no way management actually thought, coming in the season with Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, and Oliver Perez that the mets would make the playoffs!

That would be Minaya putting the nail in his own coffin. I'm with you ... dump the bum. But Minaya - as stupid as he is - he ain't that dumb. The guys on the current roster with Bobby V. at the helm are in first place right now. I have no doubt in my mind.

well, there is the matter of that 3 yr 36 million dollar contract mets signed him to. that's definitely part of the reason he's in the rotation. plenty of people questioning that deal the day it was announced.

yeah, you'd think they would, or at least banish him to the bullpen

Wolfman I'm thinking you're probably right on the Mets finances. They've had obvious needs since the Madoff incident and have also had opportunities to address those needs and they neglected to do so.

I agree. Last trade was Church for Franceour. And that was just because Manuel hated Church.

Perez is already at the very bottom of the bullpen. They only use him when they're out of viable relievers.....I know they owe him a lot of money but by keeping him on the roster they're hurting the team. They owe him the money whether he sits at home or in the back of the bullpen.
