JaMarcus Russell, the first pick in the 2007 NFL draft, agreed to a six-year deal worth up to $68 million -- $31 million guaranteed -- Monday evening with the Raiders, according to a source familiar with the talks.

Good for him. This is the only time a player will ever have power in the NFL. Now it is time for him to get to work and get ready for next season.

Hahaha this is whats wrong with the NFL...rookies comming into the league with millions of dollars to blow there head up....suprise suprise vick got bored with all his money and now look at him...or take a look at the 8 players from cinci with legal problem...or maybe pac man jones...i dunno i guess the list could go on but ill stop. Just loathm the fact that money hits these kids head and there too imature to handle it. And honestly i bet russel will be mediocre just like 25 of the the first round draft picks

This Contract is a disgrace... He flop and itll will be another waste of money...

September 11, 2007  08:20 AM ET

The sad part about it is that next year the #1 draft will expect even more than Russell signed for. It will keep going and going and going. When will it stop and who will make it stop? I hope this is one of the things that that PA and the owners and the commish change in the next bargaining period...set salaries for rookies. It works in other pro sports...it needs to be implemented in the NFL as well.

The only thing that can stop this stuff is a rookie cap. There is no other way around it. The game will be better for it because teams would be able to keep veteran players (the guys who have proved something) on the team. This will force these rookies to pay their dues and beat out a guy at his position rather than be handed a job because of the amount of money he's making.

September 11, 2007  08:27 AM ET

nfl seriously needs to fix the rookie contract structure.

September 11, 2007  08:28 AM ET

Somewhere in Louisville, Brian Brohm is thinking of ways to spend his 30+ mil guaranteed if he stays healthy and becomes the top pick in the 2008 draft.

September 11, 2007  08:30 AM ET

the only thing that the NHL has done that is right, yes the NHL, is having a rookie cap....prove yourself, than you get the big checks...

September 11, 2007  09:02 AM ET

Wow! What are the Raiders going to give next year's # 1 overall pick?

September 11, 2007  09:14 AM ET

all that time holding out and who flinched...the Raiders...so stupid...why didn't they just sign him to this deal a while ago, maybe he'd be playin now

September 11, 2007  09:27 AM ET

I'm actually curious to hear whether that clause made it in to the contract. That was the issue holding both sides up, not the amount of money.

September 11, 2007  09:27 AM ET

So basically the Raiders gave him what he wanted all along. How stupid. You may as well have signed him before training camp then if you were just going to give in to his demands. Well he is officially on "bust watch" now.

September 11, 2007  09:31 AM ET

I agree that there should be a nfl rookie cap like the NBA but to say that young players should not be allowed to make millions is foolish. Who would turn down millions just because they are young. Hey I say get what you can while you can.

September 11, 2007  09:33 AM ET

Raiders will have the #1 pick again, they won't be able to trade it, and we'll be seeing the same thing happen next year.

I'll enjoy watching him fail (which is a very poor reflection on me), but the only loser is the Raiders, because Jamarcus will still have his $$$. He'll even get another payday with his next team, because there's some sucker out there thinking he failed because of the Raiders. Bucs (or Gruden's next team) anyone?

And even if he is successful, he will never be able to outplay that contract, and will get an even bigger contract the second time around.

And one more thing, if he is good, wait 3 years, he'll be holding out for a new contract and even more guaranteed cash.

September 11, 2007  09:37 AM ET

That's only about $708,000 per game. What was he thinking?? He should have held out for a bettter deal.

September 11, 2007  09:53 AM ET

First of all,all you "Raider Haters" can kiss my ****!There does need to be a rookie salary cap and it needs to start soon or this is going to get worst. This is getting more ridiculous every year if something isn't done by the NFL.Russell originally wanted like 35 mil(guaranteed),so his agents finally came to terms, because he stood to lose more money after each game.He wouldn't have played this year, cause he didn't 1.he didn't know the playbook enough 2.all rookies hold out for outrageous money 3.He's a rookie and is not adjusted to the speed of the NFL.The NFL does need to look at the NBA and put an end to all this nonsense!

September 11, 2007  09:56 AM ET

Is Scott Boras behind this contract?

September 11, 2007  10:02 AM ET

Raiders won't have #1 pick next year...Dallas will because the Browns will have the #1 pick and they gave it to Dallas for Quinn.

September 11, 2007  10:03 AM ET

That's a monumental blunder right there, Ground Control.

September 11, 2007  10:11 AM ET

It was pretty difficult to salvage the situation at this point for Oakland anyway. I guess now they just hope the kid actually intends to bring his A-game.

I suppose we'll find out in about a year.

30 million this year for carrying a clipboard and he didn't even have to go to training camp. Whoever this guy's agent is, he should get a raise.
