No Kovalchuk treatment for Thornton

08:03 AM ET 07.30 | With Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski in the fold, Doug Wilson can turn his attention to Joe Thornton. "The onus is on us to make this a place guys want to play and stay at," Wilson said. "The group of players that we have, that have complemented us as an organization, that's something we hope to continue." Thornton, who had 89 points in the regular season, added 12 points in 15 playoff games as the Sharks advanced to the Western Conference finals. While Wilson won't publicly comment on negotiations with Thornton, he made one thing clear: He won't be doing any Kovalchuk-like deal with his franchise center, even if an extended long-term deal would help drive down the salary cap hit. "We don't have any contracts longer than four years," Wilson said. "We are a player payroll team. We operate the way we operate. Under the CBA, people have options and choices. We have our own structure."

I wish someone would offer me a Kovalchuk deal!

He is a very overrated hockey player. He is a very good regular season player but always fails to do well in the playoffs. I would take Brad Richards over Thorton easily. Especially the numbers that Richards put up this year compared to Thorton this season. Brad Richards doesn't excactly have Heatly, Marleau, and Pavelski type players on his team either. and he does great in the playoffs and has a cup do in large part to his great play.

12 pts in 15 games isnt too bad, Not saying that Big joe is a great playoff performer because hes not, he seems to lack that drive and playoff like intensity that other great players have. Brad Richards may not have as much help in Dallas but when he won the cup richards, lecavier and st.louis were easily the top trio in hockey at the time.

Thorton's point totals took a hit when he had to go up against the Hawks' pairing of Keith and Seabrook. However, the Sedin's and Flyers' top line also struggled against them.

Joe Thornton: "The group of players that we have, that have complemented us as an organization, that's something we hope to continue."
Yeah, but can that group of players find a heart somewhere and win something for once?

Sorry! That was a Doug Wilson quote in #11. Not Joe Thornton. I should've known. That's too elocuent for him!

DCruiser - if you can't spell eloquent don't try to use it in a sentence. Especially when trying to make someone else look stupid. It back fires. And as for the heart and winning comment. He and Marleau just won Olympic Gold. I'm just saying.
One more thing, what's with the overall love fest for Brad Richards? He won a cup and the Conn Smyth. Then he disappeared for years until having a decent season in Dallas. And as for his supporting cast. His cup & Conn Smyth winning year he had a few guys named St. Louis (Art Ross, Hart, Lester Pearson awards that year as well as league lead in +/-), Lecavlier, Khabibulin. I'd take his supporting cast over Thornton's anyday. But I'd take Thornton over Richards every single time.

You have a problem with "elocuent"? Don't you know it's a brave new world out there where anyone can make up any word they want and apply any meaning they want to said made up word? Get with the times.

We poor slobs here at FN have waited breathlessly for over two and half years for you to make your second comment and that's it? A spelling mistake brings you out of the woodwork? Really? And as for Thornton (you must be related) everybody knows even the organ donors society turned him down for lack of heart.
Canuck eh?
