Sweetheart deals off table for most NHL free agents

07:48 AM ET 07.30 | Middle class NHLers may no longer be looking forward to earning their free agency rights. Long-term deals and raises In previous years, the likes of Dominic Moore, a solid two-way player who had a decent playoff in Montreal, or Lee Stempniak, the ex-Leaf who found his scoring touch in Phoenix, might have been looking at raises and long-term deals. ... Now, it's unlikely any player left on the market -- outside of Ilya Kovalchuk and maybe a goalie or two -- will get anything longer than two years. "You have two forces at play," said [player agent Allan] Walsh. "You have one significant group of teams that are capped out. They have no salary space left; teams like Chicago, Boston. They just don't have any cap dollars left. They're having trouble filling out the roster right now. Then you have another significant group of teams that are on very strict budgets imposed by their owners. These teams, they have all kinds of cap space, but they have no cash to spend."

Domonic Moore, "I've been everywhere man I've beenn everywhere" is a very solid player. I think a team like edmonton might pick him up. Although he prolly won't want to go there. The Rangers shouldn't have gotten rid of him.

It seems like these idiots that work here have a pretty good sweethart deal. Like not working till 10am

Who wants to go to Edmonton at all. And when they do they seem to want to get traded out of there.

I disagree, Edmonton's roster is stacked with young talent. The exact kind of young talent that leads to winning record in todays NHL. Look for Edmonton to be a steady team for years to come if they can keep all these guys under contract.

Edmonton is place for players who are not afraid of passionate fans, attentive media, and actual Hockey weather.Kevin Lowe was a problem for a period but Tambellini is house cleaning which includes removing players that can't handle being accountable to an educated and passionate fan base.

I agree but they are still a year or two away from even the playoffs

Somebody from PA dumb enough to say something stupid about clean, fresh, progressive Edmonton? A city that values community spirit above all else? A city that is the gateway to the north, with great hunting and fishing and poised to become the oil capital of North America? A city with some of the greatest fans in the world, more passionate and knowledgeable about hockey than most? A city with a team stacked with great young talent, with a great (loaded) owner and a great GM? Is that the city "no one" wants to go to? I'll take Edmonton over ANY city (and I've been to most of them) in PA at any time!

That doesn't mean "no one" wants to go there. The "Kevin Lowe Era" is over. He was the problem. Not the city. Not the team.

I totally agree Cruiser. I love when my Flames beat the Oilers but most of us have a strong lining of loyalty to the Province also.At Flames games we still Boo Pronger. We only stopped Booing Comrie after he went back to Edm.Its a Bro on Bro scrap thing.I can fight or argue with my Brother but someone else does and the loyalty instantly places you alonside your Brother.

I couldn't agree more. It was a "Lowe" point for Edmonton. Even the Great One (Nuck's fan) is getting nervous about the Oil.

Nicely stated DC and with a new state of the art building in the works to go with a talented young team Edmonton may very well become a destination where players will want to come and stay. By the way I am fowarding your post to Edmonton Tourism :-)

Which happened way too much for my liking in recent times! Hopefully ??? the stat sheet can balance out a little in the future. But ... you're right about the loyalty thing. Rivalry is one thing but, when it comes to the playoffs, whichever team moves on, gets the other team's fan support.

BTW, I know both cities very well and have been to every corner of the province. I can say with all honesty that Alberta has some of the most beautiful scenery in North America. I'll put the Icefields Parkway scenery up against any in the world. I???ve been privileged to visit a lot of places, including numerous trips to the Pocono Mountains in PA. I know whereof I speak.

Great analogy HC...I remember the first time Pronger stepped on the Saddle Dome ice as a Duck and he was soundly booed believe me Oiler fans had a big smile on their face. Same thing when the Flames had that nice run against Tampa in the Cup final Edmonton was cheering for Calgary to bring Stanley back to Alberta. It's Friday must be getting close to Millertime down there.
