Washington finds room for optimism with Strasburg

07:28 AM ET 08.02 | Stephen Strasburg, now aimed for a bullpen session Tuesday and a simulated game Thursday, could return to the Nationals during an upcoming homestand that opens Aug. 10. Strasburg will throw the simulated game "pretty close to maximum effort," Manager Jim Riggleman said. ... Strasburg, Riggleman said, will not require a rehab start so long as his shoulder feels right after the simulated game and another bullpen session. "He would still be built up enough to continue on and pitch," Riggleman said. While Strasburg would be on schedule to potentially return for the next homestand, that is an "optimistic" plan, Riggleman said. "We're not going to hold ourselves or hold him to that. It's all about how his shoulder responds."

Hope all goes as planned. DC needs their star back.

There hasn't been a pitcher like Strasburg since Nolan Ryan and DC needs to take great care with him. I could understand rushing him back if playoff implications were at stake but DC is playing for nothing. I say shut him down. The kid has proven his stuff is for real. Give his young body time to heal and adjust and stretch him to 180 innings next year.

I totally agree with you DrewsBrew. Even if you keep him up and active you could A. work him out of the bullpen for a couple of innings here and there or give him a planned 5 inning game, enough to get a win. If DC does what the Cubs did with their stand outs, Wood and Prior, then they'd be looking for another Strasburg a couple years down the road. He's on in a million and DC is doing an excellent job in using him.

You're right. But I think Steven is OK. Yes, they should be cautious but the 25 hour a day coverage is getting a tad suffocating for the kid. He hasn't been overworked this year, either in AAA or by the Nats. I agree they should cut him off after another several starts, but let's not treat the kid like "bubble boy". He's OK, really.
