08:08 AM ET 08.02 | If accommodations translate to wins, Pittsburgh should have no problem challenging for the Presidents' Trophy. When the Penguins open training camp in Consol Energy Center in September, Sidney Crosby and teammates will find a full kitchen area where a chef can custom-cook entire meals inside the spacious players' lounge. Also in that room: five 40-inch flat-screen, high-definition televisions hanging from the walls; two sets of furniture, including leather sofas; a nook with three computer monitors for video study; and a surround-sound audio system for music.

Buildings don't win hockey games. Just ask the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Your Pennsylvania state tax dollars at work! You can say thanks to Easy Ed Rendell for all of that.

With Fast Eddy at work, I'm sure some 'stimulus' money that the feds confiscated from our greatgrandchildren found it's way into the project under the guise of 'job creation.'

Too bad the state had a way of getting a free arena, except Rendell took a ton of money from Bardon which ended up with him getting the slot license instead, of which he no longer has because he had to sell his stake in it to the guys that now own/operate Rivers.
However, the Pens simply being in a building that isn't falling apart should at least help a little.

Sidney Crossover better get game this year, guys get older and teams lose it. From runnerup to Champs to fadeouts in three seasons

Personally, I am excited about the new arena (politics aside). It is what it is, and I am grateful for Mario keeping the team in the City, and demanding the new arena to boot. The fans and the team deserve it.
That being said, obviously new arena doesn't = championships, but it isn't a minus either. It isn't as if the Penguins don't have a core of fantastic talent for at least a few more seasons, and the new arena will just be incentive to sign or resign great talent, as well.

I agree with the other comments saying the arena doesn't guarantee winning, but, it is one fantastic place. I'm looking forward to seeing a game there this year.

Nice way of putting lipstick on a pig, PensFan. We'll see if Katz succeeds in squeezing some blood out of the Edmonton taxpayers for his pet project.

I can't say that I'm aware of the politics behind this but it doesn't change the fact that I'm happy for the fans in Pittsburgh. I'm really happy they didn't end up in KC. That team will be fun to watch for the next decade. I'll have to organize a roadtrip with some buddies during the upcoming season when the Habs will be in town. How is the nightlife in Pittsburgh?

If you're trying to be humble ... it ain't working, fijiking! I wouldn't want to party with NFL types either but, I've been to Quebec a few times. You guys (and gals) are party animals over there! Especially when the Habs make the playoffs!

And they have a life size Sidney Crosby dart board and on Friday nights in there they have auctions with Malkin as the MC guy. Who really cares. Although it does sound like pretty cool room.

Unlike the stupid games PP was playing, Katz is putting his money where his mouth is. I'll give you that! But, will it be enough to coax the comatose members of Edmonton's City Council out of their unconscious state? Let's hope he somehow finds a way administer the most potent stimulants he can find in Rexall???s arsenal of meds.

I guess Sidney got a good look at the Canuck's dressing room during the Olympics and decided that they needed the same in the new arena in Pittsburgh.

As a fan of the Minnesota Wild, I can definitely second the fact that new buildings are no guarantee to championships. We have one of the top arenas in X-Cel Center and only one really good playoff run to show for it to date. But Pittsburgh is more than a new building, as they have already shown over the last few seasons. They're still a top team in the league and should contend for the title again this season.
