08:08 AM ET 08.02 | Now that Stan Bowman and the Blackhawks have walked away from Antti Niemi, there's no question the team is taking on a very different look in 2010-11. So who will replace Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Kris Versteeg, Brent Sopel and the others who have been shipped far and wide by Bowman as he clears room under the NHL's salary cap? Enter the unfamiliar faces of John Scott and Viktor Stalberg and the familiar but still little-known players such as Jack Skille, who along with a plethora of Hawks prospects will make their bids for roster spots come training camp in September. ... After signing a one-year, $600,000 contract last month, Skille figures to be in the mix. A first-round pick (seventh overall) in 2005, the winger was handcuffed by a salary cap hit of $1.25 million last season and shuttled between Rockford of the AHL and the Hawks. "I'm looking forward to having some stability in my life," Skille said. "Nothing's guaranteed, obviously. A lot of guys, not just me, have an opportunity to step in and fill some of the holes we lost through trades."

The Hawks have some pretty good prospects in Rockford but ... I didn't know John Scott and Victor Stalberg were among them. Guys like Bickell, Brophy, Dowell and Skille will get a very close look. They might be ready.

Yay! I beat the toad sucking spammers to all the posts! I think they're getting lazy!

That's why they have farm systems. I think organizations should look more to promoting their younger players than they do. It seems they always look to trades or free agency to get better. If you don't think the kid is any good, why did you draft him in the first place?

So you have something to trade to Brian Burke.

Agreed. The Rangers wouldn't know about that. The Rangers wanted a "tough guy" so they went out and got the "Boogey Man". Meanwhile they have a guy in Hartford named Dane Byers who is a very very good fighter but can actually play some hockey. He would have been playing for a lot less. More teams should bring up younger players instead of waisting money.

Boy, Canuck, you've must've had a double shot of Java this morning. You're all reved up n' ready to go .... and Argos isn't even awake yet!

They keep this up and the the crowd won't even be able to give a standing 'O' at the first home game. Half the team will be gone

Scott is from the Minnesota system. He was in Houston for a couple years before being moved up to the Wild. Lets just hope we takes getting this contact better that getting his full scholarship at Michigan Tech.

I didn't think the Hawks would walk away from Niemi but, it's a smart move on their part. Why should they give Niemi $2.75MIL? For six months of service? He may or may not be a good goalie long term. He may well be a flash in the pan.

Turco is a known quantity. He's been around and he is a quality tender who needed a change of scenery and, at $1.3MIL, he's a bargain! I only wish it was a 2 year deal!

No it just means he was cut from the same cloth

August 2, 2010  12:24 PM ET

I think this is a good move, think the team made Niemi. Guess we will find out this year.

August 2, 2010  12:26 PM ET

So with Turco in Chitown that leaves Jose Ray & Antti out there with the Caps and the Flyers needing goaltenders .
So which team will get Niemi ???

The Flyers already have Niem ... I mean Leighton! I didn't think there was much of a difference between Niemi and Leighton other than the Dees playing in front of them.

I think Niemi is a much better goalie. I don't think Niemi is worth the money he wants and I don't think he is ever going to be an elite goalie but I think he will end up having a better career than Leighton and will have what Leighton will never get, Stanley Cup. Leighton= 1 hit wonder.

Poor Niemi! See what greed does? Not only he doesn't get to play for the Stanley Cup Champions anymore, he doesn't even get to drive the zamboni for a little extra cash! And, if he doesn't cut his expectations in half ... he'll find himself in the KHL facing off against Huet!

August 2, 2010  01:37 PM ET

Who is going to play in Rockport this season. The Toledo Walleyes

This is the new NHL, win the cup, lose your assets.
