Attorney: D-Rays hid Dukes' steroid use

In July, the divorce lawyer for the wife of Elijah Dukes accused the beleaguered outfielder of using steroids. Now, she is accusing the Devil Rays of trying to hide it. NiShea Dukes' attorney, Catherine Real, said she has no direct evidence that Elijah Dukes is taking steroids, but dramatic changes in his physique and personality make his wife suspicious. In July, a judge gave Dukes 10 days to hand over a report from a recent drug evaluation. Real said the Devil Rays have the report and she has not seen it.

This whole thing is a mess.

September 13, 2007  08:31 AM ET

His wife is a gold digger, and is after money and nothing more... Did the guy take the juice, of course its completely possible, but that isnt the underlining truth of whats going on here. She is just trying to attack his image to hurt him financially, either to settle for more money to shut her up, or just to try to ruin him publicly...

September 13, 2007  09:30 AM ET

I am usually not for a woman digging like this...however, Dukes is a piece of trash that beat up on her and treated her like crap. It is well documented...

September 13, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Other things the D-Rays continue to hide:
- victories
- their reason for existence
- fans

September 13, 2007  09:43 AM ET

Yeah...all 400 of their fans were watching the Marlins yesterday instead.

September 13, 2007  09:51 AM ET

This guy does seem like a piece of trash......

September 13, 2007  09:52 AM ET

J&S, you obviously don't knwot he whole story. The guy beat her repeatedly, he texted her a picture of a gun, and threatened her. It's not like his character needs attacking. It's well documented that hes a punk. The fact that he is also ripped up might mean she actually knows what she's talking about. It woudln't surprise me if he was on the juice. I think someone's wife is a pretty good judge if their spouse's personality and physical appearance has changed.

September 13, 2007  10:30 AM ET

Hey chalklounge you forgot to mention some other things the D-Rays are hiding:
-a bullpen
-money to use towards payroll
-any hope for the future

September 13, 2007  10:45 AM ET

Oh yeah, that so called stadium they have in St. Pete is a joke. Talk about a complete lack of personality. Worst place to see game in the league.

September 13, 2007  11:15 AM ET

Yeah really Jason 70, that place has no soul. If they ever get a new stadium I hope they add some character to it. Then again maybe if they put some of their owners money towards free agency and fielded a good team the fans would come and no one would even care where they are watching the game.

September 13, 2007  11:40 AM ET

Drays should move from the AL East....no way in hell they can compete with the evil empires....

September 13, 2007  11:42 AM ET

They are that little brother that's 10 years old and wants to hang out with the older guys. Just sad.

September 13, 2007  11:43 AM ET

As someone who grew up in the Tampa Bay area I honestly believe that there is not one thing the D-Rays could screw up.

They would draw fans if they could put a decent team on the field, the are was begging for a team and would easily support a real team, but all they got was this screwed up organization.

They are really screwing up what should have been easy money. This is not a "small market", it is the 13th largest media market in the country....put a good team on the field, keep your young players together and the fans will come back.

Who wants to watch a team with no plan, makes no effort in free agency and finishes in last place every year?

BTW, This may sound strange, but I have always kinda, sotra liked the Thunderdome. It could certainly be improved but it is not that bad a place to watch a ballgame at all. Most of those who trash it probably have never even been there.

September 13, 2007  12:05 PM ET

Bandit, I have been there as well as to Camden Yards, PacBell(SBC, or whatever it is this week), Great America Ballpark, Both old and new Busch stadiums, and a few others and the Dome in St. Pete is absolutely the worst place I have ever seen a game. For one, I like watchng baseball outside, so watching it inside seems strange, but it's more than that. The place is just as dull as can be. Compared to any of the new stadiums, or actually old ones for that matter I would choose to see a game anyplace else before going back to that one.

I do agree with you that the area would definitely suppor the team if htey had a plan and looked like they were ever going to spend any money and try to be competative.

September 13, 2007  12:27 PM ET

Jason,

I completely agree that it is not a great ballpark, but I have had some pretty good times there. No big deal to each his own. I would really like to visit the parks you mentioned, have not been able to make time.

The old Memorial Stadium in Baltamore was a pretty good place too. I got to see a few games there. I also like Dodger Stadium.

But, I was born in Chicago and lived there for a long time too, so I am really a Cubs fan. Wrigley is the best hands down as far as I am concerned.

September 13, 2007  01:06 PM ET

NEXT!!.....who's NEXT?

September 13, 2007  01:36 PM ET

who cares the Devil Rays still suck...when he hits around 50 home runs than lets talk about it!

September 13, 2007  01:45 PM ET

A woman beater on steroids, that's gotta be a scary thought.

September 13, 2007  01:58 PM ET

Bandit, I hear ya. Not saying I didn't enjoy the games I checked out there. Just saying given a choice...

September 13, 2007  02:20 PM ET

If The Trop was located near Raymond James Stadium, the Rays would double attendance. Better yet, if they moved the team to Orlando, etc etc. I attended all three games in May at Disney's complex and the fans were exstatic to have another pro team besides the Magic and Predators (laugh). As for Elijah Dukes.. some people are raised in the Hamptons, and some are raised in the dank ghettos of Homestead. Enough said.
