Piazza hasn't ruled out A's in '08

The season hasn't gone exactly as planned for Oakland slugger Mike Piazza. The designated hitter, who signed a 1-year, $8.5 million contract in the offseason, has spent more than a month on the disabled list with a sprained right shoulder. And getting acclimated to the American League for the first time in his illustrious career has taken some patience. But Piazza, 39, hasn't ruled out a return next season, either in Oakland or elsewhere. Piazza hasn't yet been contacted by the Oakland front office for a possible return next year, which would be his 17th in the majors.

He has shown that he can still play. Not an everyday catcher, but maybe a back-up or a DH. Can't see a big team picking him up. The A's should keep him. Still gives you some power in the line-up(which they have very little of) for a cheap price.

He's also been a part of the injury woes that the A's have endured all season. He has been fairly productive when in the line-up, yes. But his body has also began to break down more and more as he has aged. Plus, he's going to command decent money this offseason from a team like the Yankees or Red Sox (isn't it always either NY or Boston?), and we all know that Oakland doesn't exactly have deep pockets. The thing that I question is signing him in the first place. Don't get me wrong, he's played well when he's been in the line up, but he's not nearly as productive as Frank Thomas was last season. He signed a one year deal that was basically the same deal the Jays gave Thomas (2 years - 18 million for Thomas; 1 year - 8.5 million for Piazza), and Thomas was a HUGE part of what Oakland did last season. Why not bring him back instead of chasing Piazza? It was kind of curious.

No offense Hoffa, but I doubt the Red Sox are going to move David Ortiz so they can get Piazza onto the team as a DH.

I think it's safe to say the Sox won't drive up the bidding.....this time anyway

ghostofthebabe is right.... the Sox are not going to move Ortiz to 1b or even sit him for a game just to get Piazza in there at dh. And the Sox seem happy with their current catcher situation so I just don't see it happening. And excellent game last night for Ortiz. The Yanks had just won and the Sox were down 4-3 in the 9th and I was thinking they might gain some ground on them but then again it is the D-Rays. That pen is questionable at best and lo and behold Ortiz hits his 2nd homer of the night. Final score Ortiz (I mean Sox) 5- D-Rays 4.

If I was a GM I'd rather give young guy a shot than Piazza. He was a great player, but is not what he used to be. He's stil an OK hitter, but with injuries and his age it would seem strange to sign him for too much $$$.

Piazza states he would play anywhere where he was paid millions, news at 11.

*snicker*.....

it sounds like he's anouncing it like he's doing the A's a favor

" I have decided that Oakland isn't as much of a cesspool as origanlly thought. I , therefore, have decided to give them the privelege....Nay!!! The Honor of retaining my services next year for a large sum of money!!! Billy Bean, you may now let the pigeons loose!!!"

I really dont see why the A's need Piazza in the first place. Cust is just as effective a hitter as piazza is today, and he is a fraction of the cost piazza is asking for. although i have to say i am a little bit bias after reading Cust's story in SI a couple months ago, if i were the A's i would bring up Cust and build him up, he has got a great bat he had what 7 hr in his first 4 games or something ridiculous?

Thank you, Oakland Tribune. Did anybody else notice that nothing has actually happened? This is an opinion piece. "Piazza hasn't ruled out playing in Oakland next year" means that he hasn't said anything at all.

Another load of bull.

September 13, 2007  04:06 PM ET

Piazza has not ruled out the A's. Maybe just maybe, they should rule out Piazza.

September 13, 2007  05:48 PM ET

No offense taken, but I wasn't saying that the Red Sox would sign him. Ortiz is far more valuable than Piazza is. I was just saying that it would be a team LIKE the Red Sox or Yankees, and made the point that it always seems to be NY or Boston that try to buy up all of the available free agents. If it isn't one of them, it seems like it's the Cubs, Angels or Mets, anymore. That being said, I actually COULD see the Sox signing him (I know that it seems like an inherent contradiction to what I just said, just go with it). If the Yankees appear to be ready to sign him, and the Sox think that it would hurt them in the East, I could see them making a run at him and using him as a pinch hitter/platoon player. If it means keeping him from NY, and they think that the Yankees would be helped by signing Piazza, I DO think that they will try something. That's just the nature of the beast.

One team comes to mind when i think of Piazza. It's a team who lacks power in the lineup and could use Piazza as a dh. That team would be the Angels.

Ship him to Milano for a pint of virgin olive oil.

September 14, 2007  01:37 PM ET

Hey don't rule out the Reds or Royals in 2008 either!!!

September 16, 2007  07:02 AM ET

If I was an AL team fan I'd be after him. He can hit, and will be a hall of famer.
