Braves may consider platooning Glaus

07:51 AM ET 08.04 | Troy Glaus spent his 34th birthday on the bench. The struggling first baseman was out of the lineup Tuesday night against the Mets and possibly headed for more time on the bench. Manager Bobby Cox called it "a breather," and said he planned to sit Glaus "a day or two." "Right now we just want to give him a little breather," Cox said. "It's good for him to sit once in a while. The game becomes a lot easier sitting on the bench." But in the understated manner of Cox, it could also be a sign of more change to come. ... Since his torrid stretch, which ended in mid-June, including an NL player of the month award in May, Glaus has hit just .164 (21-for-128) in his past 38 games with seven doubles, one homer and 12 RBIs. That kind of futility could also have the Braves contemplating a move to bring up 20-year-old Freddie Freeman, their top position-player prospect who is hitting .292 with 14 homers and 63 RBIs for Triple A Gwinnett.

Glaus has always been a streaky hitter. I wouldn't overreact.

Glaus was supposed to be resting, but what does Cox do? Brings him in so he can ruin a inning by grounding into a DP.
Said it before, saying it again: no team that hits less than .200 with RISP is going to win the division, much less anything else.
We need to give Freddie a shot...now!

infuriating...at this point, i'll be surprised if we can get a wild card spot.

we were trying to figure out last night how Farnsworth 2010 is different than Farnsworth 2005. The answer: he isn't.

ok i have just finished watching "platoon" for the 103,455th time and I CAN NOT find Troy Glaus in it at all. Not one scene. I must be blind.

August 4, 2010  10:13 AM ET

its a no brainer really and i'm sure bobby is aware of glaus' post all-star decline. glaus has been like that his whole career. no big deal really. I think it actually helps glaus and the braves to platoon him while giving a young bat a shot

August 4, 2010  10:30 AM ET

Who do we ship out to bring Freddie up? Bobby loves carrying a ton of pitchers, so I think if there is a platoon implemented, we're gonna see Hinske at 1B against righties with Melky in LF and Glaus and Diaz against lefties.

I don't think we're gonna see Freddie until September.

Troy's bat was slow in April and its slow again. Looking more and more like May was a fluke.

Glaus has bad knees and a slow bat right now. Not a good combo.
