Celtics see Shaq as bench-marked player

07:59 AM ET 08.04 | Celtics fans may get the chance to see how well Shaquille O'Neal's hyperbole and ego mix with a bench role. The Celtics, a source said, have told O'Neal that he has to come off the bench next season, and that O'Neal said he could accept a reserve role for the first time in his career. The three-time NBA finals MVP has not had many suitors this summer that had either the playing time or money to offer him, and O'Neal is running out of places that can give him a chance to compete for a championship as his career draws to a close. Boston was leery of signing O'Neal because if he became unhappy with his role, that unhappiness could pervade the entire team. The Celtics believe this happened with O'Neal in some of his previous stops in recent seasons.

This is actually a smart move.

True! Ferry should take notes. Shaq, even though I don't think we needed him at all, should've been coming off our bench last season, not Big Z.

Very true, as far as back up centers go, this is a great choice. He will abuse either one of MIA centers easily.

Basically! Basketball is a very simple sport, some people just make it harder than it needs to be.

Just look at it as Shaq mathching with Mbenga (LA), Joel Anthony or Dexter Pittman (MIA), and Adonal Foyle (ORL). Shaq won't be matched up with any of the big dogs, unless he's having a heck of a game. Thing is, Doc knows what he's doing. So Shaq will be used the best way possible.

AWWW LUVHER is going to love this....But to be honest he might not be that bad for them with Perk not returning until February and still wont be the same....Lord knows JO wont hold up through the 1st month without something being wrong with him....

He's either gotta guard Shaq or KG, and he can't guard either.

True... but if Lebron didn't turn his back by quitting in games it wouldn't have been a big deal... the guy did Cleveland in big time.. not sure who or what pissed him off but given Gilbert's tirade when they lost in game 5 and the letter he sent to the fans I think it might be him. But then Lebron should have known better not to bring a whole city down with him because he didn't want to win for the owner... oh well its over now. I like the idea of Shaq coming off the bench for Celts. He'd finally have the chance to send the three little pigs packing and get some revenge on the Lakers...

I agree, with Shaq on the bench will make them deeper for the playoffs. Adding Shaq to come off the bench is not a bad idea at all in that way he can play less min and be healthy for the playoffs. As long as he stays in shape during the reg season and stop playing Shaq Vs and focus more on basketball its going to pay off.

I agree. Z doesn't have a whole lot left in the tank, But Z was a fit in their offense and wasn't a square peg in a round hole like Shaq was. Shaq needed to be fed, Z did not. Z and Lebron in that pick and pop they used to run was a highly effective play, because Z could still hit the 18 footer.

No they don't and I don't think any coach would be crazy enough to match Bosh up with Shaq defensively. Shaq has definitely seen better days, but Bosh would get hurt just trying to guard him...LOL...

from what i read he is being signed for veteran min..for two years with player option in the last year...for that price , and as long as he knows he is a bench guy welcome ........it was so funny for people to say the celtics needed him to beat orlando......did they not watch the playoffs this year?
