Fasano's role in Miami offense upgraded

09:28 AM ET 08.04 | The Dolphins, says GM Jeff Ireland, aren't going to be rebuilt overnight. But they believe at least one player already on the roster may be utilized in a way that upgrades the offense. Miami talked in the spring about adding a tight end with downfield receiving skills but did not, partly out of faith that Anthony Fasano will improve and partly because they couldn't accomplish everything in one offseason, according to Ireland. The upshot is Fasano gets a third year to make a case that he deserves to be the long-term starter. His receiving yards fell from 454 to 339 -- and his touchdowns from seven to two -- largely because the Dolphins used him as a blocker on 139 passing plays in 2009. But Fasano expects that to change somewhat in the upcoming season. "They're trying to utilize me a little differently," Fasano said. "I will have some more opportunities moving around and stretching the field. I don't think my forte is pass-blocking but that's what we needed last year."

what and Martellus Bennett is better? Bennett, the star of pre-season but disappears in the regular season. Only a matter of time before John Phillips replaces him.

Parcells drafted Fasano and wanted him in Miami when he went there. The Cowboys obliged by trading him to the Fish, which in turn forced them to draft a TE. Bennett looks like a bust in waiting while Phillips, I agree, looks like a very adequate backup and complement to Witten.

He'll be alright! All because of the attention my man B. Marshall will get lol........Fasano will benefit tremendously.....watch folks!!!!!!!!! This is the year of the FINS!!!!!! Henne ready to explode folks!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 4, 2010  07:00 PM ET

and why exactly won't pass blocking be what is needed this year Mr Fasano ?

August 5, 2010  11:17 AM ET

because there will be extra coverage on Marshall, thus freeing up Fasano to run a route. Fins to Win!!!
