Vols have star quality, lack depth at QB

08:20 AM ET 08.05 | In Tennessee, the Vols are thin at QB, but do have a headliner. Matt Simms will open as the favorite to win Tennessee's starting quarterback job, and he'll have the first-team reps to prove it. But that doesn't mean Tyler Bray can't make it interesting, and Vols coach Derek Dooley doesn't really have a choice but to make sure both quarterbacks are ready to contribute given the shallow depth chart. With only fellow freshman Nash Nance really around to push those guys, it's clearly a two-man race to take over for Jonathan Crompton -- and a solid spring has given Simms a head start.

Man, everytime I read something about TN I realize more and more how bad Dooley has it to start off. I hope he is able to pull something decent together. He seems like a classy coach. And the SEC nees TN to be strong again.

Agree and agree. I'm pulling for Dooley and Tennessee to get back on their feet. This could be a tough year, regardless of who their QB is.

I agree! I really hope that Tenn can put together a good season because Kiffin really screwed these guys by leaving in a cloud of dust.

Nice!

Well we know he won't be throwing to Rod Woodson.

I don't even think it was all Kiffin's fault. Tenn had 1 or 2 poor recruiting classes before Kiffin arrived, so Kiffin did have significant holes to fill. Now, it turns out the a lot of highly rated recruits from Kiffin's one class are now off the team, so there is a really big hole. As much as I dislike Kiffin, I don't put 100% of Tennessee's problems on his shoulders. Maybe 25%.

having a QB depth problem is probably the worst one to have.. ask me how i know

OK, I'll play along.

GEE, SVT - I GOTTA ASK -- HOW DO YOU KNOW...?

And we aren't all that far away from having a REAL greenhorn taking snaps, either. Brantley goes down, and we're toast.

Agree. Got to root for them.

Well, I won't say I'm PULLING for the Vols, but if they break even, that'd be OK by me.

Gotta keep in mind they're division rivals, boyz. Let's not get carried away here.

The East looks so weak this year. Even IF UF goes undefeated, the division games might drag down the SOS, hurting the BCS score, maybe causing UF to get passed over the big dance.

No true Alabama fan wishes anything good for Tennessee ever since Phil Fulmer decided to play snitch. Sure its on us for cheating but Fulmer, such a useless piece of scum...

Ditto. As long as the Vols lose the game in mid-September, I'm good.
