Fernandez-to-Chicago gains traction

07:21 AM ET 08.06 | With one report suggesting the Knicks have bowed out of the Rudy Fernandez race, the likelihood he winds up in Chicago -- or goes nowhere -- has increased. Good news: Portland just lost one of the main suitors for [Fernandez]. Bad news: Bulls just lost one of the players that would have rounded out their rotation well. All in all, if the Knicks aren't going to make a move on Rudy as [a] tweet suggests, and a [CSN in Boston] tweeted the other day that the Celtics weren't interested, then the Bulls seem like the logical landing point remaining. However, it seems entirely possible that Portland will merely overvalue Rudy, not trade him for a future 1st, and let his value recede to nothing until he goes back to Europe.

Playing behind ROY is nobody's ambition so let the guy go somewhere else and show us what he can do. I hope the Bulls get him. Being the guy chosen over McGrady if he doesn't exceed expectations Rose's agent will hear it from Paxson.

A 1st round pick's value is ENTIRELY dependent on the location of selection. A 1st rounder from CHI or BOS is worth significantly less than one from NYK. If I'm POR, I'd try and pry a young talent before a 1st rounder from the Bulls.

A 1st round pick...you got to be kidding....for Rudy, who in two years has Complain, cause he was a STAR starter in Spain, and sounds if he self rate himself higher then he is.

Good point.......but bottom line is Rudy is a back up.......no matter where in the first round you are, a back up isn't worth a first round pick. Now ELITE sixth men......like Gordon, Odom....is a little different.Rudy is not an elite back up

totally agree......im surprised this is the deal the knicks stand their ground and not give up a pick...but rudy is a back up .......

Exactly. I'm not sure whose calling the shots in POR but running the Knicks and Cs away from the table ain't helping their cause. I mean, if CHI is the only team at the table, there's no leverage.

I think this dude needs a chance to play. Let him go!

Rudy gay , a backup?...he's not elite, but he's a capable scorer just under 20 a game @ 46 %

at face value that's a pretty good backup...

Yes they are. Allow me to play devil's advocte.
Rookie Headcoach, young PG who can score but has yet to prove he can distribute, a PF who has a history of injuries, a C who can be a knucklehead and also has some injuries.

They look good on paper, but can this team really bea the Cs, Heat, or Magic?

Well here are a few advantages against the C's

rookie HC (Thibbs)= was the engineer behind the team d philosophy in boston the last few years
Rose= one of the few PGs in the league that can defend and overpower Rondo
Noah= young legs vs an elder garnett and fresh injured perk

is portland's thinking that matthews is their new backup 2 of the future?

Yes - potential will sell you tickets but it doesn't always translate to a winning formula. They still have Deng who's like the Curry of th Knicks and they both have ties with Agent Zero.

Gordon and Odom are elite?? LMAO!!!!!! If that is the case then Big Baby is too since he took both of these guys to school....

Add RJ to your list......

August 6, 2010  10:03 AM ET

Why would a team trade a number one pick for Fernandez? I like his potential but that's a bit steep for a backup. Go for a second round pick and call it a day.

the difference is that deng actually remembers how to get to the arena.
