Backup QBs battling in Seattle

10:57 AM ET 08.08 | When the starting quarterback misses 11 games the past two seasons, turns 35 next month and has a history of back and oblique injuries, it's prudent to have a reliable backup on the roster. At great expense, the Seahawks traded for Charlie Whitehurst, a third-string signal caller in San Diego, to push Matt Hasselbeck for the starting job. Seattle also brought in former Buffalo Bills standout J.P. Losman to create even more competition at a position that Hasselbeck has held since 2001. After a week of training camp, two things are obvious: Hasselbeck, who enters his 13th season and is a free agent after the 2010 season, isn't ready to relinquish the starting job. And the real competition is at the No. 2 spot.

If you are battling with JP Losman you are in some serious trouble....

August 8, 2010  11:11 AM ET

Looks like they need a starter. First things first.

August 8, 2010  11:32 AM ET

I understand their pain

The job was Whitehurst's to lose and apparently he's doing a pretty good job of it(losing it that is)

Whitehurst should win the competition and be the Back-up QB JP Losman their in Seattle... After the Seahawk release JP Losman; He will then join the QB competition up in Minnesota and become Farves replacement.

And that sound you hear in the background is A.J. Smith and the San Diego Chargers laughing. Whitehurst was never going to be anything but a 3rd stringer as a Charger and looks like he's cementing that position in Seattle as well.

When was J.P. Losman ever a standout? If that were the case, wouldn't he be the Bills starting QB?

August 8, 2010  01:02 PM ET

So in other words neither Whitehurst or Losman are any competition to Hasselback.

And given Hasselback's recent history - it looks like it's gonna be another long season in Seattle...

Whitehurst has been inconsistent. Losman is fresh off playing in the championship season in the UFL and is making Whitehurst look like the 3rd string QB he is. But you can't hold it against ole Charlie. I think that's to be expected for a former 3rd string clipboard holder stepping into a new system and working with the #1 unit. However, it seems Carrolls new system agrees with Hasselbeck. For someone who's learning his 3rd new offensive system in 3 years, he appears to have picked up the new offense rather quickly and looks comfortable running it. He said he likes throwing to so many different new targets.
Meanwhile, I find it kinda scary that the most impressive looking players in camp are Mike Williams and Leon Washington

Last time I checked, you could get a 3rd string quaterback in the seventh round. The Seahawks apparently got the rounds confused. Smart move.

Word on the street is that Hasselback may be contemplating retirement. But he hasn't really told anybody anything.

I heard he's been talking with Favre about what retirement is really like.

I'd love it if Whitehurst turned out to be the stud Carroll thought he was, but my God, if you're "battling" a medicority like Losman, and somehow losing, well... what does that say about your skills? Matt starts to come apart before the season is 1/3rd of the way in. This doesn't look good. The big question now is this: which former USC quarterback will Carroll give away the store to pick up?

(Note to Cowboy Dave: I thought the same thing. I blinked and re-read the line to make sure I'd seen it right. I was gonna Google stats to see if I'd had one of my long blackouts and missed Losman's stellar stretch with the Bills, and then I remembered a few dozen similarly cartoonish statements in T&Rs past.)

Well let's not get carried away here.

Well, with Matt having a history of being injury prone, I can see why its a big deal in Seattle.(:
