Is Uggla being overlooked as MVP candidate?

08:03 AM ET 08.12 | Dan Uggla ... MVP? He's on pace to score 112 runs, hit 39 home runs and drive in 104, which are stout numbers. Toss in a .283 batting average, which would represent a career high if he can hold it until the end of the season, and you're looking at a career year for the Marlins' human fire hydrant. But are the numbers good enough to propel him into MVP conversations? ... They're good enough to at least warrant a look by MVP voters.

It's about time someone takes notice.

I would vote for him if I had a vote.

August 12, 2010  08:41 AM ET

he's probably worthy of the talk but he wont and shouldn't beat out Votto or The Machine

He's definitely worthy of the talk and I'm glad someone finally said something. I was talking about this with my friend 2 weeks ago and said the exact same thing. Too bad he's going up against two players that get a a ton more publicity than him. Also two teams that both have a great chance at making the playoffs. Add that together and no dice for Uggla. He probably won't even garner many votes. Sucks.

You're 100% right. If you don't play on a team competing for a play-off spot, in a major market like NY, Boston, Chicago or LA, or have been a publicity hound your whole career....chances are you're not going to be considered. His numbers are worthy of not only the talk, but a lot of votes too.

He's a good player on a crap team with few fans in the stands to see him...

But, it is irrelevant because he stands no chance vs Pujols or Votto...

August 12, 2010  10:01 AM ET

Iam glad the MArlins held on to him & didnt trade him...he deserves the attention he is getting now but @ the end there is no way he will beat out Pujos for the MVP even with the great numbers UGG is putting up !

August 12, 2010  10:33 AM ET

He's having a fine season by his (or Marlins') standards, but he shouldn't even be looked at by MVP voters. There are no less than ten NL hitters who are having better seasons than he is.

August 12, 2010  10:34 AM ET

I always go with you had better be on a playoff team to win the MVP, or be head and shoulders above the competition. If your team doesn't contend where is the value?
He is neither.

... or Dunn, or Zimmerman, or Huff, or C. Gonzalez, or Werth, or Holliday, or A. Gonzalez, or Fielder...

As I said, he's having a nice season, but it is, in no way an MVP season -- at least not this year.

You got it.

He's having a nice season yes. MVP caliber? Perhaps not. Votto or Pujols will get it (I'm hoping Votto).

I mean, you can mention him, but he won't win it. Team performance aside, his average is 25 points lower than Albert's, has 2 fewer homers, and 13 fewer ribbies. It's not even close.

August 13, 2010  10:07 AM ET

In a word... No

August 13, 2010  02:09 PM ET

I would say consideration, yes. Will he win it? No. I could see a top 5 finish at least.

All good numbers, even great for a second baseman. However, there's the issue of his defense, which has never been stellar, still isn't and, worst of all, was put on display during the 2008 All-Star game (in the negative sense). Dan might get a few votes towards the bottom of the picks but, unless the Marlins actually start to figure in a pennant race, he won't be garnering any top line votes (not with Joey Votto, Albert Pujols and Adrian Gonzales around).
