08:09 AM ET 08.13 | Add another club to the list for Bobby Valentine, who according to friends has a great deal of interest in the Mariners. There has been considerable speculation that Valentine could be a candidate to return to the Mets if they fire Jerry Manuel, and he recently said he would be interested in the Cubs' opening after Lou Piniella retires at the end of the season. ... However, someone familiar with Valentine's thinking said Valentine believes the Mariners job "is among the most appealing jobs in baseball" despite the current turmoil.

i'd agree with bobby v. great city, fairly new ball park, a top 5 pitcher in the league along with some good young arms.

they need an anchor in the middle of that lineup

Lets be honest...the guy is desperate to get back into coaching. Are we really going to hear that every time a team has fired a coach or may fire their coach that Bobby V is interested. No Kidding!!! Orioles may fire and did fire their coach, he was interested. Seattle fires their coach, he's interested....every team out there that may or has fired their coach he's going to be interested.

Agreed...

It's kind of Pathetic :-)

Bobby V could have a nervous breakdown, take off all of his clothes, smear himself with honey and laydown on an anthill. What? It could happen.

He could do all of those things and STILL get the Mets into the postseason. I wish they would just fire Manuel. Today.

I think Minaya and the Wilpons have missed the boat repeatedly. It is not Manuel's fault, though he is not overly important one way or another.
Firing Manuel means at least another year or two of Minaya not making the right moves.

I think the players are there. They've proven they can win. I don't think any of the players respect Manuel. I agree that Minaya is part of the problem (a big one), but it's clear these guys just don't play consistently for Manuel. They would for Valentine.

My point was that if they fire Manuel that that is the sacrificial lamb that would save Minaya.

There ya go. His choices are few.

He wants to coach in MLB, there are only so many open spots...

There's a lot of people looking for a managers job. Most of them have never managed a team before though. Speculation is bound to go overboard about Valentine. But one of the top candidates for the job, is former Mariner Joey Cora. He's presently Ozzie Guillen's bench coach. He was a finalist for the job when Zduriencik hired Wakamatsu a couple years ago and is very well liked in Seattle. Zduriencik is also looking to talk to those managers who are reaching the ends of their contracts, including Tony La Russa, Joe Torre and Dusty Baker.

Admittedly, I have a soft spot for Bobby V, who was a high school star in my hometown (Stamford CT). Still, as a major league manager (excepting Japanese baseball), his record is only so-so - two 90+ win seasons, 1 pennant, a .510 winning percentage over 15 years and 2,189 games. Nothing to be ashamed of but I'm not quite sure it elevates him to a must-have for any major league team (his ESPN gig has probably done more for that than anything he's actually accomplished from the dugout). That said, I can see where the Mariners would interest him. They're nowhere near as bad a team as they've played this year and the ownership has shown an historic willingness to play with the big boys financially. And, from the Mariners' standpoint, a manager with a Japanese connection may well be attractive (since they have a history, albeit with mixed results, of recruiting players from the land of the rising sun). It will be interesting to see how it plays out and, if it does, where ESPN goes for his and Showalter's replacements. Maybe I'll email them my number . . .

There is only one "Bobby V " and he sings not manages.

O's made correct selection. Bobby V will be waiting forever for that perfect job

Yeah, Bobby Valentine being named Manager of the Seattle Mariners, would almost be a homecoming of sorts for Valentine; Returning to the state of Washington and his PCL roots with the Spokane Indians; where Bobby V led Spokaneto the PCL Championship over over those Islanders in 1970.
Although Daren Brown seems to be an improvement for the Mariners, right now; Bobby Valentine maybe the BEST left fit as Manager for the Seattle Mariners, to get the Mariner Organization Turned around and ride of the current Turmoilst, since Buck Showalter is doing the same with the "Birds" in Baltimore, this year. Maybe Valentine would then keep Daren Brown on as his Bench Coach. To give Brown a better chance to succeed Valentine in Seattle as manager; So after Joe Torre retires in LA as the Dodgers Manager in a few years-- Bobby Valentine could replace Torre in LA... Thinking Bobby Valentine is actually waiting for Joe Torre to make his Yes or No Retirerment Decission Public before he comments to a contract.

If I had the money I'd make him an offer he couldn't refuse to come back to the Mets. If he comes back he has to bring in his own coaches. that won't happen with Omar still at the helm. Clean house NY

Obviously I'd like to see him here with the Mariners, but the sentimentalist in me would like it to be Cora. Either way it'd be an improvement. Cora would generate more fan loyalty/attendance, as he's much loved here, but Valentine would give us more confidence that things will turn around. Although I think it wouldn't matter if they brought the Professor back from the dead to manage the team as long as the lineup remains so popless.
