The shields are down, the moat is dry, the henhouse is unguarded. East Lake is defenseless. But while the last 30 left standing on the PGA Tour are practically filling their scorecards with fractions, one hole, at least, fought back in the third round of the Tour Championship. No. 6, the signature par-3 on this classic old course, grew overnight by 50 yards. Players who were pulling 8-irons on Friday were wielding 3-irons on Saturday, the pucker factor increasing proportionally. One in five of those tee shots found the murky depths of the lake that gives this place its name. Not everyone was pleased with the new arrangement. "It's kind of a rotten hole from back there, to tell you the truth," said Steve Stricker, who is hardly known for authoring complaints. "All the players feel the same way. We all talked about it, hoping they weren't going to put it back there. And they put it back there on the day that it's right into the wind."
