ND QB transfers to N. Illinois

Sources indicate Demetrius Jones is enrolled at Northern Illinois -- and was on Saturday's players' pass list for the Huskies' game against Eastern Michigan. Reports said that Jones has a "Z ID" number, which all students at Northern Illinois are given. Still in question, though, is how much contact -- if any at all -- Jones has had with the Huskies coaching staff. If Jones enrolled by Wednesday -- and one source close to NIU said that was the case -- that means he made the cut-off date for counting this semester toward the year he must sit out. NCAA rules say a transfer player must be enrolled by the 12th day of classes for the clock to start on the year the player must miss when transferring from one D-IA (bowl subdivision) school to another. Northern Illinois started classes on Aug. 27, making Wednesday that critical day.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Don't let the door hit you in the butt, Demetrius. Maybe you should tranfer to a Division III school so you can be sure you can be a star QB.

September 16, 2007  11:04 AM ET

Run Forrest run. How bad must it be at ND.

September 16, 2007  11:14 AM ET

Good for you Demetrius! The best way to improve your life is to confront the negative forces and move past them. You're out of the Golden (rusting) Dome!

September 16, 2007  11:23 AM ET

Look, if you want to play, why sit on the bench for a few years? Especially considering Claussen is a freshman. I'd transfer, too. Honestly, playing football is about playing, not watching. Go somewhere and play.

September 16, 2007  11:41 AM ET

Good luck Demetrius. He had to transfer because he knew he wasn't going to get another shot at N.D.

September 16, 2007  12:29 PM ET

DJ sounds like a great kid. I wish it would have worked out for him at another position at ND, but I wish him the best of luck at NIU.

P.S. This move clearly has much less to do with how badly ND is playing right now than it does with the success ND has had with QB recruiting lately.

September 16, 2007  12:30 PM ET

Smart move: get off the sinking ship while you can. (You can hear them playing "Nearer My God To Thee" on the HMS Norte Dame as she slowly sinks beneath the gaze of Touchdown Jesus.)

September 16, 2007  12:38 PM ET

Nearer My God To Thee is my favorite hymn.

This kid will fit right in at NIU: He quit on Notre Dame in the middle of the week and NIU quit with a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter against SIU (a 1-aa school) and ended up losing. They'll be perfect for each other. Quiters.

September 16, 2007  01:47 PM ET

Weis made it clear that Clausen is going to be the starter for the next four years barring injury. I don't put this guy in the class of a quitter.

September 16, 2007  07:58 PM ET

Worst Notre Dame team I've ever seen

September 16, 2007  08:40 PM ET

I'm with what seems like the minority in this thread. I don't blame the kid for transferring. You only have four years of eligibility, so why stay behind Claussen and waste that eligibility on the bench?

September 16, 2007  11:26 PM ET

This kid will be expected to do well having come from a high profile school like ND...Chunky Charlie just isn't fare...McDonald's has a buy one get one free sale on Big Macs and Weis wouldn't share....

"Fire Charlie Weiss"

September 17, 2007  12:01 AM ET

He has a few good reasons to go...... 1st of all HE SUCKS!

2nd HE SUCKS!

He should have been a man about it and told the coach what was going on. But.... NO he packed his bag in the middle of the night and ran as fast as he could. I think he had bad dreams of GT guys running after him.

September 17, 2007  12:57 AM ET

He is a quitter. Trust me...ND is better without him. Just like Emanuel Moody from USC. They both cannot handle the competition. Being a starter is earned...not given. Good ridden that both are transferred out!!!

September 17, 2007  02:08 AM ET

Why is everyone riding him. A coach can leave his team without telling them, and when one of your prized players leave you rip him. He knows whats going on up there the team is in trouble so let him go and get off his back. You are all a bunch of cry babies. You can't go around and brag how good your team is and has been and not take heat when they lose. That's life. Take the heat and when and if they do come back in the next few seaons then start to talk again. I'm taking heat for my Michigan team you can too. GO BLUE!!! ND STINKS!!!!

September 17, 2007  08:40 AM ET

You can't blame the guy. Everybody know that once Claussen got the ball it was going to be four years of warming the bench for his fellow freshmen QBs. He may as well have moved on. It may not have best for the team but it was certainly best for that individual. Anybody against doing what's best for themselves?!? At his age would you expect anything less?

September 17, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Maybe he could have switched positions. Personally I'd have rather stayed and taken the free degree from Notre Dame than Northern Illinois. This guy isn't going to the NFL. The degree from ND would have helped him out more in life.

September 17, 2007  11:26 AM ET

Man that $10 million contract is looking great right about now...

When a guy who won the job is transferring to Northern Illinois, that is not good.

How do you explain giving Charlie that contact when his 3 year record is going to be worse than Ty's? Ty's new QB, Locker, is much better than Clausen.

They've got some really big problems in South Bend...
