Steelers to consider dumping Big Ben for Dixon?

08:02 AM ET 08.16 | Not only might Dennis Dixon be a short-term answer in Pittsburgh, he may also be a long-term answer over Ben Roethlisberger. Though Dixon's departure will be inevitable if the Steelers ultimately decide that Ben remains the long-term answer at the position, the inevitable could come a lot sooner if Dixon plays with the first string in the regular season the way he performed with the backups in the preseason on Saturday night. So if Roethlisberger doesn't play well in the last 12 games of the 2010 season, don't be shocked if Big Ben gets the bum's rush, just like the Eagles did when they realized that if they didn't find a way to elevate Kevin Kolb, they'd risk losing their chance at ensuring quality quarterback play deep into the current decade.

Never happen in a million years

"Would the Steelers dump Big Ben for Dixon?"

No.

Now... if Big Ben were sharing time with Plax, then that's different... but that ain't happening.

Unless Big Ben is still making decisions with the wrong head...

You never know Otis after this season and the colleges open up...............

I really see this team collapsing this year. They're not going to make the playoffs. I gaze into my crystal ball and see a housecleaning coming next year, if the lockout doesn't do it for them.

do steeler fans even want ben anymore??? the mood sure does feel like he's unwanted.

Hey I've been saying Dennis had potential since he arrived, but talk of the Steelers getting ready to dump Ben after one preseason game is a bit foolish

Steeler teams don't collapse with veterans like Ward, Harrison, Hampton, Miller, Polamalu, Keisel, Hoke, Smith and Farrior who'll keep the team competative and balanced in tough division. I don't see management "housecleaning". There are a core of young guys (Timmons, Woodly, Clarke, Mendenhall and Wallace) who need the mentoring....

Don't worry about it biz he's probably a Pats fan

Yup. I see it too.

Y'know, if the Steelers come back and stomp both Baltimore and Cincinnati, I'll be happy. But, I just don't see it happening. They didn't click last year, and other than having Palamalu back, I don't see where the improvement is going to come from.

But, like I said, I'd be happy to eat those words.

i think that if dixon can manage the ball and be the play maker i think he can that while he will prolly never be big ben he could still be a good qb for a team that really dose not need a dominant qb to win because they rock off of they runnin game and thrive off they defense.. they could trade ben and get something back i say send him to the vikings after the season is over for a first a second and 4th next year and the next years 1st and 3rd and maybe 6th rounder the following year. it might seem like alot but not so much so for a team that needs a qb after next year and would be wise to take big ben who would give him another 6 years or 7 years of pro bowl play and probally win a ring

I like Dixon...but the fact remains Ben is a top tier QB arguably in the top 5. He doesn't wow you with numbers but he wins.... Steelers are geared toward an aggressive pass first offense, moving to a "manager" would be counter-productive at this point...again i like Dixon but he's a few years away (i'm hoping for a steve young/ montana type relationship)
