Gardenhire willing to trade no-hitter for boos

08:12 AM ET 08.16 | Ron Gardenhire was thinking more about Kevin Slowey's arm than his place in history. "I'd be booing, too," Gardenhire said. "I want to see a no-hitter myself, but I also know that I'm responsible for this young man's arm, and we were going to protect him no matter what." Slowey needed 106 pitches to get through seven innings. He was making his first start since Aug. 5, when he threw a season-high 114 pitches in Tampa Bay. He missed his next scheduled start -- last Wednesday at Chicago -- because of elbow tendinitis. "I'm not going to let him throw 125-130 pitches; it's just not going to happen," Gardenhire said.

Manager did the right thing. Let the fans boo; it shows they give a damn.

Sucks that they pulled him and the pen couldn't keep the no-hitter in tact, but winning is more important.

The only thing I might have done differently was to tell pitcher/catcher to throw strikes from the 8th on and let what happens happen. That way you could remove him as soon as the first hit came, and keep him in if he got lucky and the balls always found a glove.

QUOTE(#5):

I never really understood the difference between giving up a walk and giving up a hit in a so called no hitter.

It's called a no-hitter vs. a perfect game. The distinction is made.

Intentionally putting a runner on base is not a bad strategy. If you're a groundball pitcher and the opposing team is the Twins, you may consider walking Mauer and then setting up the double play. That's smart baseball.

Good call. The kids arm is a huge investment and the coach did the right thing.

agreed. Gardenhire, while making the unpopular decision, was only thinking of the kid's (and his team's) future....the season isn't over yet.

The Twins are in a tight race for the division and a win is more important than a no-hitter. Slowey was showing signs of wear and I doubt he could have held on until the end. Manager did the right thing.

for once, i too agreed with gardy's handling of a pitcher. and i stress, for once...

Good move by Gardy, that's why he is in the dugout and those booing are sitting in the stands

August 16, 2010  11:55 AM ET

I remember when the Red Sox lost a game and their pitchers thew a "no hitter". Matt Young threw a complete game and lost 2-0 but only pitched 8 innings...But since he could only pitch 8 innings (Visiting Team), it does not count as a no hitter.
Of course 7 walks will do that to ya...

The headline of this story should read, "Gardenhire willing to trade no-hitter for win."

August 16, 2010  12:12 PM ET

this decision makes Gardy look like a genius, but for us hard core fans when you see Slowey throw a breaking ball that never broke and plunk a batter on his shoulder blade and walk 3 batters, well.....he was not ready to push his pitch count to 125-130 pitches. Well done Gardy!

Afternoon Dums.

Manager did the right thing. Better to save the young kids arm for the immediate future (playoffs, if they make it) and for the upcoming seasons. Hes already shown a little weakness from previous 100+ pitch outings so better safe than sorry.

August 16, 2010  12:51 PM ET

Gardenhire's a meathead for doing that.

Gardenhire should've let him in until he gave up a hit. They were up 4-0 for pete's sake!
