08:11 AM ET 08.17 | With the clock ticking, Washington narrowly avoided the what-next scenario of Bryce Harper not singing. Monday night, the Nationals and Scott Boras began building the framework of a deal by 11 p.m., early enough, they thought, to avoid a last-second showdown. "And yet," Stan Kasten said, "there we found ourselves again. With a full minute to go, Mike [Rizzo] and I both thought we were not going to have a deal," Kasten said. ... "You go down to the last second until somebody blinks and you make your last-ditch effort," Rizzo said. "Once the smoke cleared, we had common ground to get a deal done." And when, exactly, did the smoke clear? "We don't know," Kasten said. "It's not an exaggeration. I can't explain it or brag about it. But it was inside the last minute."

Finish last, pick first, pay the most, pray.

Best analysis I've seen. Succinct, accurate and very true.

no doubt this kid is a stud - mashes to all fields, cannon arm, speed on the basepaths. i hope the kid turns out to be a player at the next level....cause he's helped to create a huge bullseye on his back.

I like the fact that this kid chose to go to a league that uses wooden bats and still mashed. Anyone that picks up one of those sorry ass aluminium bats is at least part chick.

The Rays have done it very well, we will see if the Nats can replicated their success.

I think the Nats have the brightest outlook of any team. If they can add more young talent and a couple vets they will contend for a long time. Harper is the truth!

My son uses a wooden bat in little league but he is the only one.

Eight years after being picked first, Brian Bullington got his FIRST career win the other night. Pray indeed.

If he didn't sign, it would have made no sense for him. He left High School a year early, just so he can be drafted a year earlier. He would have looked pretty stupid if he didn't sign.

wow, you don't see that too often. especially the way these aluminum bats are made these days. that's good stuff!! the wood bat offers a much smaller sweet spot compared to aluminum. all of the boys I coach train with wood but use aluminum during games unless we play wood bat tourney.

If he didn't sign, couldn't he go play in Japan for a year, then become an international free agent, and be able to sign with any team he wants for probably much more money?
