06:22 AM ET 09.17 | The contract of Patriots coach Bill Belichick remains one of the more closely guarded secrets in the NFL, but ESPN.com reported yesterday that Belichick recently signed an extension through at least the 2013 season. The report indicated the extension had been reached before the NFL's recent ruling against Belichick and the team regarding videotaping procedures.

He's a good coach that has done stupid things. The end result is that he's a winner. Hopefully the contract is not guaranteed if he breaks the rules again (i.e. cheats), is suspended or dogfights.

Great game, great time, ow my head.
Every loser team and their fans out there are going to whine to Goodell about this and that while the Pats steamroller over them. The offense is in mid-season form, with a balanced attack. The D looked to be pitching a shutout for a while.
Make room for #4!

September 17, 2007  07:19 AM ET

Hmmm let's see here! Belichek cheats in a manner that damages the integrity of the NFL for years to come and receives no suspension whatsoever! Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, and Michael Vick committed offenses that had no direct impact or effect on the NFL (only to themselves), and are immediately suspended! Things that make you go hhhhmmmm!

September 17, 2007  07:40 AM ET

cboystar,
You are 100% correct. You cheat as an organization and you get a slap on the wrist. You cheat as a player and we get rid of you. This is amazing to me as well. I have always said cheat and win and everything else is forgiving.

September 17, 2007  08:18 AM ET

YEAHHHHHH! You know, I was nervous all offseason. The GIANTS didn't can Coughlin and so the New York media was publishing "rumors" that the GIANTS were planning on replacing Coughlin with Belichick after the 2007 season. After all, Belichick helped guide two GIANTS teams to SBs as Parcells's defensive coordinator. And Belichick's contract was up in New England.

If this incident did nothing else, it forced Kraft to announce a contract extension earlier than planned, making me and just about all of PATRIOT NATION ecstatic.

The belligerent New York Media, home to the 0-2 JETS and 0-2 GIANTS, has stalked Belichick since Manjudas turned him in for spying, yet you still get the feeling that if Belichick had decided to bolt for the GIANTS, they would be doing cartwheels.

Oh, BTW, Mangenius (AKA ManStupid) just brought in the punter the PATS released Josh Miller. Does this cheating ever end? Just b/c it's legal doesn't make it right, just like it was legal for years to engage in videotaping. Manstupid (AKA ManBoy) has now, in addition to absconding with the PATS quarterbacks coach Daboll, invited Elgin, Hawkins, G @ Y, Caldwell, and now Miller in for data mining. If that doesn't reek of espionage ...

And now in the wake of the Goodell ruling, the JETS want a broader investigation.

Note to ManBoy (AKA Mangina): your cameo on the syndicated television series, the Sopranos is an embarassment. Five years down the road, everyone watching that show will receive your presence with a "who is that guy? I don't understand this reference. Is he a goon with a rival gang?"

The PATS unloaded on the Chargers last night, and the Chargers had this game circled on their calendar for months and were itching to prove to the world the PATS were frauds. The stuffing of Tomlinson on 3rd and and 1 sums up his evening.

Don Banks said it best: "So much for Camera-Gate." This is why the JETS want more. They are incensed that the PATRIOT victory will have the world convinced that spying or no spying, they are still a great team with a great coach. Always have been. Now the PATS are 2-0 and everyone else in their division is 0-2. Still, the PATS have one of the toughest schedules. They have PITTSBURGH and BALTIMORE and DALLAS and INDIANAPOLIS. To quote the scholarly John Madden: "there's a lot of meat on that bone."

September 17, 2007  08:23 AM ET

belicheat got the extension before the camera incident not after.

September 17, 2007  08:26 AM ET

BrSee, I must admit that I was both surprised and impressed that the announcers on various sports programs this weekend were mostly unified in their condemnation of the Commisioner's decision (or lack there of), and of Belichek's indescretions. The only "head-scratcher" for me is where is the PUBLIC outcry regarding the situation along with that other situation regarding the "gambling" NBA official. Are the athletes the only ones who can get the public blood "boiling"? Here lies a serious double standard that in it's silence speaks volumes for the society in which we live!

September 17, 2007  08:30 AM ET

I agree with you --cboystar--, not only did the league slap the coach on the wrist and let him back to the sidelines withinn a week, wich certainly looks like there was some bias in favor of the organization.

But we also learn that the hooded cheater that walks along the home teams sidelines in Foxboro gets a contract extension, from his boss, for all his trouble..

Nice message Mister Kraft... goes something like " The end result is all that matters to us and we dont care about integrity as a franchise and we care less about honor..."...

September 17, 2007  08:33 AM ET

Problem is: videotaping was not illegal until this year. "But we should all agree it's still wrong?" you say? "It's espionage," you say?

Well, how about what Mangenius (AKA ManStupid) has been doing in inviting all those ex-Patriots into his office? (Josh Miller, most recently, but Caldwell and Hawkins right before the opener). And then there was the tampering with Branch). In fact, I think there may already be a law that ManStupid (AKA ManBoy) is violating. I hear the harassment and stalking laws in New York state are fairly rigorous.

September 17, 2007  08:36 AM ET

Why is this such a big issue with you critters? This has been going on since the 1940's in pro football. Case in point, the pictures taken from the pressbox of formations and plays in action that defensive players review after EVERY series. That Pats got caught, busted, lets move on!

September 17, 2007  08:37 AM ET

The TRUTH longs for the carefree days when Mike Vick was tossing puppies.

September 17, 2007  08:37 AM ET

BLUESILVER, looking forward to our date on October 14th in Texas Stadium! Bring the video camera!

September 17, 2007  08:57 AM ET

According to the box-score 73,615 people were at the game at Dolphins stadium to see the Cowboys beat the mammals, this includes Miami's players and coaching staff.
However the fans in Miami find consolation, it seems , in the fact that none of the two teams cheated.

September 17, 2007  09:16 AM ET

It's called "class" Daupins 13, something that is deminishing greatly in the NFL!

September 17, 2007  09:34 AM ET

I agree --cboystar-- I agree, while on the subject of "class", I would really appreciate if all the people associated to that sports franchise, based in Massachusetts, could refrain from using words like ethics or honor.

They accomplished what they accomplished using whatever means necessary, but it just seems "out of place" to associate words such as ethics or honor along their name.

September 17, 2007  09:36 AM ET

This video tape of defense signals is about as significant at Belichek being stopped for speeding on a freeway. Some other things come to mind: spitballs, corked bats, filming of closed practices from a high rise building, steroids, watered-down football fields, etc. Get over it.

September 17, 2007  09:43 AM ET

Truth,
EVERY team in the league are ALLOWED to take pre-snap and post-snap pictures. No team is allowed to record the opposing team signals.

The bad thing is the Pats have been accused of cheating before and now they have proven those rumor to be true. I think Brady is the best QB in the league. However, I now wonder just how long and how often they've been cheating?

September 17, 2007  10:02 AM ET

Easy now, guys. Belichick cheated, yes. But so have a lot of other organizations.

Are you going to take away the Raiders three Super Bowl wins? Do I really need to list off the dozens of sneaky and borderline evil things they pulled to earn those wins?

Yes, earn.

Just like that Pats earned theirs. Saying that this is something that will damage the NFL for years to come is a bigtime overreaction. This is just another page in the book.

September 17, 2007  10:04 AM ET

They cheated, they got caught, and they got punished. No asterisks are necessary, although I imagine the constant love they get from the media will take a dip over the next couple of years.

September 17, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Someone once said, 'Sometimes you are so smart you are actually stupid.' That pretty much describes Bill Belichick and the Pats. His legacy and achievements are tainted. Who knows? Maybe he was cheating all along! (DC)
