Looking for a sleeper? Try Cal

08:08 AM ET 08.18 | Is the country missing out on the Bears? Cal has a golden opportunity. The Bears have not fared well when expectations are high: In 2007 and 2009, they were No. 12 in the Associated Press preseason poll but were un-ranked in the end-of-season poll. This year, the Bears aren't expected to be ranked and might not receive a single vote. (That's in addition to being picked seventh in the Pac-10 media poll.) But with a senior quarterback, a veteran offensive line and a favorable schedule that features seven home games, the Bears have the ingredients to produce a rare surprise.

Don't they try and sell this story every year?

yes. They do. Its right up there each year with ranking VT in the top 10 only to watch them tumble into oblivion.

Come on, man. They finished #10 last year.

Definitely not buying Cal. It's like buying Ole Miss, UK or USCe or whomever is the flavor of the season in the SEC.

Excellent comparison. ESPN usually hypes up some other middle of the road SEC team to make a run to a BCS game. I guess if they keep predicting these things, once every ten years they will be correct, and they can pat themselves on the back for being "experts".

... kind of like Todd McShay does for scouting. He might be wrong 99 out of 100 times, but when he is right about that one "reach" pick, he's an expert. Dooooosh.

I was thinking Clemson.

Musburger and Mandell both Northwestern grads - coincidence?

I'd like to have prime seats for the Cal - Stanford game this year. If anyone wants to invite me to be their guest, I may be able to scrape together the air fare...

If you take out that middle period, you've got yourself an accurate statement.

Question is whether the self-absorbed intelligentsia at Berkeley even know thay have a football team.

It comes to mind when Stanford's the scheduled opponent.

I'm actually in SF the weekend of Cal/UCLA (10/9 @mem stadium).

I'm ready to start excepting offers for tickets now.

I'll bring back pictures of Ali.

Cal is a snoozer. I can't sell it and people won't buy it.
