Did Blazers miss Oden's flaws?

General manager Kevin Pritchard acknowledged this weekend that the Trail Blazers had questions about the health of Greg Oden before they selected him with the No. 1 pick in the June NBA draft, but that his right knee was not among them. Nearly all the Blazers' pre-draft worries were tempered when Oden's agents allowed the Blazers to perform a series of magnetic resonance imagings on various parts of Oden's body, including his wrists, hips and knees. Still, several media outlets have published comments from unnamed front office personnel from the Eastern Conference that said they had red-flagged Oden's physical, which was taken at the league's pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla., in early June. The inference in those quotes was that Pritchard and the Blazers should have seen Oden as an injury-prone player.

I knew that he was going to be injury prone. Just look at his college days. He appears to be a nice kid but I really believe that he is going to have an injury plaqued career and that they should have kept Z-Bo around until they see how he developed. There is no such thing as a sure thing.

COUGH...SAM BOWIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The TRUTH has learned that Oden's mama forged his Birth Certificate and he is actually 38 years old....

I saw this coming, not the injury, but that the pick should have been Durant. Portland, of all the teams in the league should have been leery of choosing injury prone big man over obviously more athletic and all around talented athletic swing man. Instead they bought into the hype, not realizing that the rest of the league wants them to fall flat on their face anyway. No one, except Portland was happy with them getting the #1 pick anyway. No offense to Oden, but, Stevie Wonder could see that Durant was a better pick. Oden's comparisons to Shaq and Bill Russell were a joke. Portland believed the hype and no one is laughing more than the Boston Celtics.

Right on Maxwell...for history's sake alone, they should have taken Durant.

September 17, 2007  10:03 AM ET

The bottomline is that this is a very unfortunate thing to happen to a promising young man such as Oden. Everybody loses. The Portland organization, because they aren't getting the player they thought they would (but, after all, they did trade for Darius Miles and drafted Quintel Woods). Greg Oden, because of all the flack that he would get if he wouldn't recover from this and the waste of a life-long dream. And the league, because nobody will see how good Oden will be. There is still hope, in the presence of Amare, but there might also a painful truth, in the presence of Webber. Either way, the Seattle Supersonics should feel pretty good about themselves right now.

Durant could be just as injury prone. He is basically a walking stick ready to snap. Now he'll be playing with grown men wearing on him. I look at Durant and he kind of reminds me of Shaun Livingston because of how fragile he looks. Durant could break a leg getting dressed in the morning.

I rembeber Tracy McGrady being just as skinny as Durant when he came into the league. But he put on some muscle and seems to be doing pretty well. I'm sure Durant will do the same, and even better.

Re: Durant....skinny or not, injuries could happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime.... but Durant's a great player, and hopefully he'll be smart enough (and lucky enough) to be able to avoid injury as much as possible. Durant is thin by NBA standards, but he's not that skinny...and the guy can play.

I love all the hand-wringing that's happening. I hope idiot columnists remember this in 10 years when he's an 8-time All-Star and leading the Blazers to glory. But they won't. They'll probably be stuffing their faces with the free food and slopping it all over their $8 ties.

I love how all of you guys are so quick to jump on the Durant Bandwagon. Everyone needs to calm down. Oden is only 19 years old. He could spend a year rehabbing, another year honing his skills and be an all-star at 22. The advantage that both he and Amare have is youth. Webber, Mashburn, Allan Houston and the rest of the guys who have had this surgery were all either in their prime or just a little past it. Injured or not, any true NBA fan knows that while Oden was and is an impact player, his maximum value will come in his mid-20s when he's physically and mentally mature enough for the NBA. In short...Oden will be fine.

September 17, 2007  12:12 PM ET

He'll be alright...people jump to conclusions a little to fast nowadays.

September 17, 2007  01:16 PM ET

Yea, he is extremely uncoordinated...

September 17, 2007  01:18 PM ET

A lot of people keep using Amare as an example of how Oden can come back from this. STOPPPP!!! Amare has always been health except for this injury. Amare isn't as heavy as Oden therefore, there is less stress on Amare's knee. Amare doesn't have one leg an inch shorter than the other. Amare doesn't have hip problems. A lot of Oden's medical problems are caused by having one leg shorter than the other. That affects your legs, knees, hip, and back. He may make it back from this surgery but will be plagued by injuries due to the problems noted. That's why some teams red flagged his physical.

Oden dominated in a weak basketball conference without any competition from anyone his size to match up with him anyway ... The headliones were gonna be either he got hurt for the season or had 6 points and 3 rebounds a game for his first year ...which ones worse ?

September 17, 2007  01:28 PM ET

oh yeah ...and how old is this guy anyway ? he looks looks the same age as Bill Russel

September 17, 2007  01:48 PM ET

The whole thing with this guy was weird. He did take more time off then anyone I've ever heard of just for his tonsels. Now this, I just had a bad feeling about him.Durant was the pick to get.But I know that's easy to say now!I wish him all the luck in the world. He'll need it!

September 17, 2007  01:50 PM ET

Amare and Kidd comming back from this and playing at a high level is not the norm. Most people are effected their whole lives by this! At his size this will haunt him!

Plus Amare and Kidd were not rookies when they had this surgury.
