Avs goalie controversy brewing?

It wouldn't be accurate to suggest that the Avalanche has a goaltending controversy since Peter Budaj earned the right to begin the 2007-08 season as the No. 1 man based on his second-half play last season. But Jose Theodore isn't conceding anything. There were rumblings this summer the Avalanche might buy out the final year of Theodore's contract, which will pay him $6 million, $5.3 million more than Budaj. In the end, general manager Francois Giguere decided it was worth the risk to bring him back, in part because the Avalanche wouldn't have saved significant salary-cap room.

Budaj starts and Jose backs him up. No controversy. Budaj is the better goalie and until that changes he should start...what's the problem?

what happened to Theodore? I don't remember his equipment being massive or anything that season he dominated, so it can't be that. is it a lack of dedication to the game? Or are the Hell's Angels still all over him, like they were in Montreal? I'll keep cheering for this guy, but I'll pass on betting on him. Budaj WAS the better tender last year, and he deserves the job if that keeps up

What controversy? Peter Budaj rocks! Jose Theodore sucks! There is no controversy! Not by a long shot! The only controversy I can see is Francois Giguere's decision not to buy Theodore out! (DC)

Yep! Let Budaj start since he proved he can win! Jose is a good back up. I think he is past his prime but he may surprise the league and have a great season if he gets the chance but don't count on it! There is no controversy here. #1 goalie is Budaj no question!!

What ever happened to Theodore!!! The guy was a Hart Trophy winner and now he can barely make an NHL team!!! What happened!! I know, let???s blame it on O.J, or better yet let???s blame his funk on Paris Hilton. When he hooked up with her, perhaps the peroxide from her hair absorbed any talent that was left in him!! Yeah, that sounds about right!!! Damn you Paris Hilton!!!!

September 17, 2007  01:27 PM ET

POPS...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

September 17, 2007  01:31 PM ET

POPS, if he was running around with Paris Hilton, that would explain it. Stupidity is contagious! That's why he started hanging out with shady characters. He sold his soul to things other than hockey.

Yeah, I'm with you, POPS. Blame it on Paris Hilton since he'll never take responsibility for screwing up his life and career! (DC)

goCanada , you may be onto something , HA in Quebec have considerable influence in the underworld , his family is still in the Montreal area and they were deep into it . As for his disappearance of his better playing days . . .. who knows . . . of course this is all speculation and alot of "what if's " . You know , he reminds me alot of Tom Barrasso in the 80's when it looked like he could'nt stop a beach ball from going in the net . . .lol

September 18, 2007  10:11 AM ET

I was figuring, truth be told, that Theodore may be playing so poorly because if he is so bad that they can't put him in the game, then the HAs can't put the fix in through him - can't force a guy to tank a game he's not playing in.

September 18, 2007  10:11 AM ET

or maybe he WAS on the 'roids a couple years back and really WAS using the propecia to cover it up...

September 18, 2007  10:12 AM ET

anyways, my point is that this is one heck of a drop-off in a heck of a short time frame for a kid who isn't even old yet. I just feel like SOME other factor must be involved

September 18, 2007  01:30 PM ET

Its a classic goaltending duo. 1 will start and 1 will back up. It seems they will fight for the job which is a good thing. So why are we talking about this?

September 18, 2007  02:07 PM ET

jose is a lousy and expensive lurker- let him go!!!

September 18, 2007  08:25 PM ET

All I can say is this is a little payback from the Habs for stealing Patrick Roy so long ago. I guess Bob Gainey is a little better at trading than Reggie Houle, isn't he Pierre Lacroix?

September 21, 2007  06:57 PM ET

You know, Pierre got too much credit for the Avs being good. Money can buy alot. He stole Roy, but other than that his trade record is not that great...This is demonstrated in the Theodore fiasco.

As for what happen to Jose, it is obviously the altitude. yeah, the altitude, thats the ticket..
