What BYU should worry about as an independent

"Conferences dominate so much of what is critical to Division I," Gladchuk said. ... Citing a lack of knowledge about the details of BYU's discussions, Gladchuk declined to speculate about the Cougars' plans. But off experience, which also includes stints at Houston, Boston College and Tulane, he listed television, scheduling and bowl agreements as BYU's main issues if it elects to go independent. ... "You have to have some national sizzle," Gladchuk said. "You have to be unique in some way with how you appeal to people. And you have to have personal relationships with (conference) commissioners and athletic directors and in television to get the things you need."

And leaving the MWC on a winning note is important too. Hard to see them ahead of TCU or Utah this year. Ditto for BSU and TCU next year. If they could not crack the BCS in the best non-AQ conference what makes them think they will be able to pull it off by themselves?

I'm curious how this is going to play out. If BYU, Utah, TCU all joined the same conference, they would get their automatic bid. They all are going different directions, though.

Yep, TV, scheduling and bowl agreements are critical issues -- but don't forget you need to be winning 90+% of those games. Not so certain that is what will be happening, but we'll see.

They already have their own TV network (although I don't know in how many homes) but they better win. If this fails they could be left in the cold for the next conf shuffle.

I'm wondering if half of the reason the schools (other than Boise State) left the WAC to join the MWC is expense.
In other words -- they don't have to go to Hawai'i to play a lot of games, especially in non-revenue sports.

The way it looks is BYU should stay in the MWC and let that conf potentially earn a BCS berth. They already have their own tv network (which is one up on most top schools), and they are potentially gaining better competition in BSU, FSU, and UN.
