08:29 AM ET 08.20 | Look out, bigtime programs, here comes BYU. Texas and Brigham Young are very close to announcing a three-game, home-and-home (it hasn't been reported where the third game will be played) football series starting in 2011. BYU is supposedly interested in playing football as an independent school and wants to schedule high-profile games. Texas and BYU have played twice in the history of the programs, with the Cougars beating the Horns 22-17 in 1987 and 47-7 in 1988.

Revenge is a dish best served cold... Play the games late in the season.

Would this be considered a "marquee game" for Texas as well? I wouldn't think so.

August 20, 2010  09:29 AM ET

Better than playing Georgia State or FIU, however

BYU has played CFB for 100 years now. Can't FN get a second picture for a second BYU article? Even the preview mags have more than one picture for each team...

Well, OU should have thought of it as a marquee game last year.

Is there any way the sorry-**** decade between DKR and Mack could just freakin' disappear from CFB history? Could it just go 1983, 1984, 1996, 1997............. ?

I'll sign up for erasing 85-90, but you've got to join us in trying to erase '02-'05.

(largely erasing 1906-1980 would be cool, too)

Yeah, but when you play a tough conference schedule it's ok to play a couple of creampuffs ... or so I've heard.

SC fan here whose grandpa played for BYU and over 3/4 of my family at least attended BYU, including my wife, and myself having attended a school with those initials in it, BYU-Idaho, I can say that it would be a good move I think. Many people outside of Mormondom, a term used to describe the culture that follows membership in the Mormon or LDS Church, just do not understand how faithful of a group the Cougar following is. I remember one time in Bakersfield, CA they had a big College tourney for soccer and I went because I had a good friend playing for Michigan who happened to be there, and there were a ton of BYu fans there rooting for the team.

So although I do not know how successful the independent role would be, I do think that it would be better than staying in the MWC for football. If they could make a jump to a BCS conference then I think that would be better over all, but I think that they saw the writing on the wall when they were passed over this last round. Independent status might just work for them.

But SC will forever be my team even if we have another Hackett era. Fight On! Sorry I had to say something for my team.

Oklahoma is not afraid of scheduling a strong OOC team, however Texas would never schedule tough OOC games. Mack Brown said on EspnU, "Here at Texas, we want to win Championships, and playing tough OOC games decreases your chances of going to the NC game". Thats why Texas and Florida beat up on these teams that are so much physically smaller.

Every good program has its ups and downs. For every legendary coach I think we could all point to two or bad ones that we wish would not have been at our schools. In our case I can think of one coach that at one point was a great coach and then was not.

I think Texas does schedule some tough OCC from time to time. I remember Texas having a home and home with Ohio State. Ok that is all I can remember. What can I say?

Good post but if BYU stays in the MWC it may well become a BCS conference.

I really doubt it. I think if Utah would have stayed then it might have happened. Even with Fresno and Nevada, it is still a weak conference at the bottom. I just think that the big guys will raid the conference before they let that happen. I might be wrong, but I would be surprised if the MWC ever got that status.
