09:22 AM ET 08.21 | Former Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent ripped current commissioner Bud Selig for attempting to "please everyone" by allowing the Cincinnati Reds to honor Pete Rose on the 25th anniversary of Rose's setting the all-time hit record. Ironically, Rose, who was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling, is not available for the actual anniversary, Sept. 11, because he has a prior commitment at a Kentucky casino.

Is he gambling at the Casino.....

That's Bud - trying to be everyone's friend instead of knuckling down and enforcing the rules!

At least they respect and encourage his habits.

good for you rose just focus on the casino thing!!!!!

August 21, 2010  11:29 AM ET

Good to see Rose is trying to rehabilitate his image by staying away from the sorts of things that got him banned in the first place...

August 21, 2010  11:35 AM ET

Selig's an idiot and so is this whole Hall of Fame/Banned from Baseball crap. Seriously, guys actually CHEATED using Roids. As far as I know, Rose never bet on his team. Get your priorities straight baseball, that's why no one cares about your sport.

August 21, 2010  11:53 AM ET

Rose cheated, after he was done playing. Hs offense was after her produced amazing stats. The other scumbags cheated to produce amazing stats. Let Rose in the hall because there is no evidence that he built his resume by cheating. Keep the cheaters out of the hall because their stats are fake. Then, tell Pete, and the rest of the cheaters, they have no place in baseball because they cannot be trusted.

Amen brother. The book (pun intended) should be closed for good.

Pete continues to show poor judgement. Who's surprised?

August 21, 2010  12:44 PM ET

BWAAA HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA!!!!!

Nobody was as happy when Indians were granted the right to build gambling casinos all across this nation, as Pete Rose. Now he doesn't have to tell the wife another lie while he squirms away to Vegas. he can just go to Belterra.

My recollection is that he DID bet on his team, but there is no evidence he ever
bet AGAINST his team. Perhaps somebody can confirm/refute my memory.

Anticipating a possible reaction, it is BAD to bet on your team. First, b/c it is against
the rules and Rose knew this. Second, a manager could damage a young player's arm
or hurt the team's prospects for the entire season by unduly focusing on the outcome
of a game.

Sadly, Pete Rose was, is and likely always will be a sick man. He has the gambling jones
to the extreme and while I feel sorry for him, his sickness does not condone his behavior.

He bet on his team to WIN! Give me a man who bets on himself everyday of the week and I'll show you a winner...

Which Pete Rose is/was!

He is in the sports book, parlaying baseball games...

Rose did bet on his team tom win - but not every game. That leaves the door open for organized crime to guess that the manager knew something about an injury that could impact the game.

I do not like Pete Rose. Ironically, I have to hear about him more - in his banned state - than I would if he were simply in the hall. Cooperstown is not the Hall of Angels. There are alcoholics, drug users, wife beaters and true cheats in the Hall. Rose was guilty of two things in his playing career: having a large ego and being a horses patoot. Both of those things could be said of Ty Cobb, as well. Neither should disqualify Rose.

August 21, 2010  01:26 PM ET

I think that as a player Rose should get in

August 21, 2010  01:38 PM ET

He's officially at the casino to sign autographs, but I'd wager he won't leave without placing a few bets.

I'm a lifelong Cincinnati fan. I grew up idolizing Pete, and unfortunately was at the ballpark on September 10th, 1985. I used to say that Pete deserved to be in the Hall for what he did on the field, didn't cheat, didn't bet against his own team, and blah, blah, blah. The reality is that Pete Rose is trash. He couldn't admit to his gambling without a 7 figure book deal (after he'd written two books about how he didn't gamble). Even when the commish was willing to meet with him and it seemed like there was a glimmer of hope that he could get his banishment revoked, he couldn't stay out of the casinos and clean up his image. His latest shenanigans with wheeling out his 20 year old playboy model girlfriend onto the Howard Stern show and talking about Joe DiMaggio's junk made me ill. I love what Pete did for the game as a player, but having him in the hall would be a bigger black eye for baseball than keeping him banned.

Officially it is a payed appearance to sign autographs. I'd wager that he won't make it out the door without placing a few bets.

I'm a Cincinnati Reds fan, and like everyone else from this region I grew up idolizing Pete. I, unfortunately, was at Riverfront Stadium on September 10th, 1985. I used to say that Pete should be in the Hall for what he did as a player, never cheated, didn't bet on his team to lose, and blah, blah, blah. The reality is that Pete Rose is trash and always will be trash. He couldn't admit to gambling without it coming with a 7-figure book deal (after previously writing two books about how he didn't gamble). Then when the commissioner was willing to meet with Pete and it appeared that there was a glimmer of hope that his banishment could be revoked, he couldn't stay out of the casinos and clean up his act. His most recent shenanigans with taking his 20 year old playboy model girlfriend on Howard Stern and talking about Joe DiMaggio's junk made me cringe. Putting Pete in the Hall would be a bigger black eye for baseball than maintaining his ban.
