09:20 AM ET 08.22 | Greg Oden is healthy enough to bowl. To play basketball? Not so much. Not yet, anyway. But the 7-foot Portland Trailblazers center says he's getting there. "The doctors tell me I'm on time," he said Saturday. Being "on time," however, does not necessarily mean being ready for the start of training camp in October or the season opener Oct. 26 against Phoenix. "By saying 'on time,' means I'm on schedule to heal," he said.

Story talks about him at the Third Annual Team Oden Summer Slam, an event he sponsors to support and encourage mentoring youth in Oregon. Oden has been with Oregon Mentors since 2008.

Saturday's event, held for about 200 youth and their mentors, was hosted by Big Al's Bowling Alley and Arcade. Youth and their mentors were treated to pizza, soft drinks and bowling.

And as far has bowling go ;) Oden bowling a 98 avg maybe in should take on Obama

It's Oden last year of his rookie contact at $6,796,524 ......how well he does and IF healthy ...RFA with an Qualifying Offer of $8,788,681

So does Portland offer Oden a contact at Qualifying, with Przybilla being in the last year of his contact, too.

It's time to call it quits, Bro.

Greg who?

August 22, 2010  11:04 AM ET

I say Portland has to play out this year. Camby starts and you see what you get out of Przbilla and Oden. Essentially their game is the same. I know Oden has 'potential' but really, at this stage they are both big Rebouders. Oden is perpetually injured, Przbilla had an injury. If all three centers are reasonably healthy then with ALdridge, they have a nice big rotation to combat the Lakers.

And if his basketball career doesn't work out, he can star in "Boogienights 2"

He really needs to give it up. By the time he's 50 he won't be able to walk with knees like that.

He's the only so-called '18 year old' ever to enroll in college while receiving social security and medicare.
