10:44 AM ET 08.22 | During a recent conference call to promote his upcoming title fight rematch with Frankie Edgar at UFC 118, former UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn revealed his thoughts on the current trend of fighters employing a win-first fight-second style. "I vote to keep the 'fight' in 'ultimate fighting,'" said the Hawaiian fighter. Penn believes that young fighters are losing their uniqueness by emulating one another and also because of current trends in mixed martial arts judging.

or he's trying to deflect attention to the fact he has no cardio, and his incompetence in cardio training is baffling at best.

I was thinking the same thing. He has to try and end the fight early cause he seems to gas after the 2 round in most of his fights....

Like it or not. Boring or not. Overcome this then BJ. I hate BJ Penn.

He does have a point look at hacks like Koscheck who lay over poeple all match to grind out a win instead of trying to submit or knock someone out! They should extend matches to try and combat this. Imagine if they were doing this for 12 rounds????

I agree with BJ. MMA needs more guys like Chuck Liddell (in his prime) to counter this trend. Someone w great sprawls and takedown defense mixed with high level striking.... GSP, Koscheck, Edgar, Maynard, Sonnen, etc. obviously have the win first, fight second mentality BUT these are some of the best in the world, and if you cant stand it then learn to avoid the takedown.

If he actually worked out, his career would be even bigger. To much of the laid back Hawaiian Lifestyle.

says the guy who eye gouges every fight he's in. If you dont believe me, youtube his fights and watch him throw punches with this thumbs out to catch the other fighters eyes...

Sonnen??? He whooped Silvas A@@ for 5 rounds and him trying to finish the fight from the top throwing punches is the reason he lost....Everyone said he could have just laid on top like some of the others you mentioned but he was still trying to finish Silva when he got caught in the arm-bar choke.....

Yes, Sonnen. As much as I wanted him to win that fight, he just doesnt have the power or bjj skills to finish top guys.

I shouldve been more clear... These fighters I named do not tend to finish fights against top level guys. Sure, Josh has a nice KO of Yoshida and TKO of Trigg, but he couldnt finish Diego, Lytle, or Daley (who is as good on the ground as Tank Abbott). Im a fan of all these fighters. And Im not claiming they arent good.

GSP is really the poster boy for do nothing fighting. Guys like Hardy (who was obviously out skilled) can leave a 25min championship Ultimate fighting bout with little more than a black eye...

BJ is trying to deflect the point that he got his butt kicked. BJ should shut up and fight. He is his biggest fan and it seems to be getting worse as he gets older.

No Penn's just still being a b!t-ch 'cause he can't beat GSP, who didn't look too cautious when beating Penn to a pulp...he looked like he knew Penn was nothing to worry about.
