Penny still scarred by surgery

Penny Hardaway went under the knife in the summer of 2000 believing his doctor was repairing a simple meniscus tear. He woke up to learn he had undergone microfracture surgery, the dreaded procedure that has effectively ended a handful of NBA careers and significantly altered several others. But unlike Greg Oden or Amare Stoudemire or Jason Kidd, or any of the others who knowingly underwent the career-changing procedure, Hardaway was caught by surprise. And the scare hasn't left him the same since. Seven years later, Hardaway's attempt at a full recovery finds him in Miami, with an old teammate, an old-school coach and an overwhelming assumption from outsiders that an old injury has long since sealed his fate. But this actually isn't a desperate last stop for a once-great player who can't let go. It's a continuation of a career that was unexpectedly stalled for far too long.

Come on back Penny. He was always one of my favorite players.. and he might have had the best commercials with little penny. It's between lil penny and Mashburns Grand Ma Ma for the best b-ball commercials.

September 18, 2007  09:57 AM ET

Larry johnson had grand ma ma not Mashburn and let this be a warning for the GM's out there: Skinny players arent durable!!!!!

September 18, 2007  10:36 AM ET

I hope he rips it, good for him and I am glad he got a second chance...

September 18, 2007  10:45 AM ET

how do you not know this?!

how does your doctor not prepare you for the possibility of needing this.

who was this quack?

September 18, 2007  10:48 AM ET

Penny is as worthless as his nickname indicates. He'll be the twelfth man on Miami' bench. He'll whine about it and he'll be released before the season's half over. Either that or he'll trip over his warm up suit and be out for the year.

Cannot believe that Shaq and Penny are back again. That to me is absolutely awesome.

As far as I am concerned Penny has nothing to prove to me. He could have had a better career if not for injury, but he still left enough of a mark on the game. Plus his crib is awesome.

September 18, 2007  11:39 AM ET

yeah, your right, my bad. Larry Johnson.

The TRUTH has learned that Penny had his procedure done by the infamous Dr. Bison

The TRUTH is suddenly cravin' some brown suga!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 18, 2007  01:58 PM ET

The reason why Penny had to come back is all around him in that pic. Child Support.

Penny, the Heat are already struggling. Do them Heat fans a favor and retire.
You want redemption? Go seek Brian Hill and apologize.

Like crying over lost love.

He should be lamenting how he drove away Shaq.

September 18, 2007  02:49 PM ET

It's a very uneventful summer for the NBA, except for that ref Donatello scandal... wait, that's the Ninja Turtle.

I'm glad Shawn Kemp's no longer in the news. But, can't the NBA "cook" something up so we won't be reading about another has-been like Penny?

September 18, 2007  03:48 PM ET

maybe he can start with wade out for a while

September 18, 2007  04:18 PM ET

anfernee hardaway was one of the greatest shooting guards of the 90s.

nowadays...whatever you gotta do to pay the bills, penny.

September 18, 2007  06:53 PM ET

he wasn't that great a shooter. He did better driving to the hole. Without that first step, he's where he is now. If he could shoot better, he'd be talked about like a Reggie Miller.

Cant wait to see how he does
