ACC video reverses field goal call
At 7:23 p.m. Saturday in a room filled with enough television screens to stock a sports bar, ACC officiating coordinator Doug Rhoads reviewed the most controversial call of the day -- Virginia kicker Chris Gould's field goal that almost wasn't. As the ball sailed through the air at North Carolina's Kenan Stadium, Rhoads trained his eyes on back judge Virgil Valdez below the left upright. "He's still looking," Rhoads said. "Now right there, he's starting to turn away." As the play continued, Valdez ducked as though afraid the ball would hit him. The ball sailed just inside the upright, just over the crossbar. Valdez signaled the field goal was no good. Rhoads shook his head. The call was corrected when replay officials upheld coach Al Groh's challenge. Rhoads proclaimed Valdez an "outstanding" back judge, but said the play will be on the instructional video all ACC officials review this week. "It's the first time in history, maybe in college football, we've had a field goal (call overturned)," Rhoads said.

Without a doubt. The FG was in the 3rd quarter with about 5 or 6 minutes remaining in what would be a 22-20 win for Virginia.

I've never heard of the need to review a FG on replay.
I could understand the review of a FG going over the top of the upright, but one that crossed the crossbar right near the post. There is no excuse this needed to be reviewed. The official completely screwed up.
The other problem is that the coach had to challenge that call in the first place. The replay officials should have been watching that and should have made the call for a review without the coaching having to use his challenge.

It's an ACC game between North Carolina and Virginia. Who cares? I can see this replay having big implications on the BCS title game. Hell, this won't even affect the ACC title game.

Thanks for your worthless comment, Nolesdabomb. If you don't care about this game, why read the article? It's a major conference game, regardless of the caliber of the teams, and it's a major official screw-up that was fortunately caught early in the season. Fan Nation should implement an application so that users can block inane commentators like noles.

I'm only stating the truth. I know Florida State won't be in the ACC championship game or a BCS bowl game for that matter. But who cares about a meaningless game between N.C. and Va.? The Duke-Northwestern game was a bigger story. TURF,,,,,relax, breathe. It's not that serious.

I couldnt believe the ref missed this one, he was ducking out of the way without looking because he was afraid of getting hit. afraid of getting hit with the ball? this is football, and the ref is a fraid. Send him to ref soccer, this is ridiculous.

He should be fired. If you're unwilling to do your job, and keep your eye on the ball, watch the game from the bleachers. To then make a call without admitting you didn't see what was happening is pathetic.

Wait wait wait. Was this review after the end of the game, and did the review change the outcome of the game?

No, Choco, it occurred during the run of the game. The article references a review of the review by the ACC officiating coordinator.
And it wasn't exactly a close call either - the replay was pretty obvious. I can only assume the replay official didn't bother to look because usually you'd think the guy standing under the upright knows what he's looking at.

So much for this game not having an impact on the ACC race. As of 10/20/07, Virginia is 7-1 overall, 4-0 in ACC play, and leading the Coastal Division 1/2 game ahead of Virginia Tech (6-1, 3-0). How are the Seminoles doing? Oh yeah, they just got embarrassed by Miami at Doak tonight.
