Impressive rookie LB on the bubble in Pittsburgh

09:22 AM ET 08.23 | Stevenson Sylvester is making excellent impressions in Pittsburgh, but it may not be enough to overcome a numbers game. The problem with Sylvester, if he continues to develop, is the Steelers risk losing him if they cut the former Utah star in early September and try sneaking him onto their practice squad. Sylvester will have to show the Steelers he can contribute on special teams for them to keep an extra linebacker. They also will have to decide whether the rangy Sylvester can adjust to playing with a lower center of gravity since his height and long legs can compromise his leverage when trying to shed blockers. "He plays high," Butler said. "I don't know if that's something we can get out of him, but we're going to try."

No...not at all....I just ah ,um..... Hey how about thouse bears eh?

The Titans would snap him up in a heartbeat. He was on their radar during the draft and we need some youth at that position.

He will be a Lion if they let him go ... they have absolutely no depth at LB right now.

Yes, and they will be third in the NFC North this year.

I was wondering where the Lion fans were. (Said the packer fan.).

Giants.... go get him! He's a player, period.

And if you cannot get him, see if he has a sister. Would be an upgrade over Gerris ( ouch, I am hurt again coach ).

We are going to put up some points this year ... the big issue is our secondary ... weak is an understatement. If our D Line gives a QB anything longer than 2 seconds, there will be an open man.

my skins need to pick him up and put andre on the trading block i dont think he is going to be affective in the 3-4 .. i like andre i just think the 3-4 will not suit him when it comes to chasing down recivers in and covering running backs and tight ends in space

This is why the Steelers should have traded a lot of their picks this year to either stockpile for a year or two down the road or to trade up and get a top-tier O-lineman in the draft. They brought in veterans to fill up LB (Foote) and WR (Randle-El, Battle) spots, and then ended up drafting players that may not even make the team. I'm not saying the players they already have are going to be better long-term, but it looks like they are in "win now" mode and these young guys are going to end up somewhere else.

From what I have seen, the Steelers have a pretty good grasp of player movement. They handle the draft quite well. Every team has a player or two that is picked off their practice squad.

There must be a max salary for the practice squad, I know there is a min of like 5.2k a week right now. I would think there would be a max cap or else teams would pay their bubble guys a high salary to stay and/or not negotiate with other teams.

The big issue is Thaddeus Gibson who was a 4th Rounder. He is going to have to get through and snuck on the practice squad too.
I am a huge Steelers fans for 20 years, and they always draft well over their needs. Worilds was a fine pickup. But to then follow it up with 3 straight backers blows my mind. Patrick Bailey is their special teams ace and he plays MLB. The final spot is between him and Sylvester. And I guarantee Sylvester gets the last spot because he is a Tomlin guy. Bailey who is to smart for Tomlin won't make the team.
Sylvester isn't going anywhere.

I think they are one of those teams that truly draft value and not need. They all say it, but few stick to it. It sure has not hurt them.

& no depth at QB or wide receiver or tight end, or safety for that matter. I dont think they have great towel boy depth or extra ticket takers...wait they dont need extra ticket takers, sorry.

So we pick this guy up b/c the interns say he's a great LB? I bet you think Chase Daniels and Jordon Palmer should be battling for the starting QB job too? smh....

August 23, 2010  05:04 PM ET

He is a fifth round pick. They tend to stick, and any team that takes him has to put him on their 53 man roster.

That's how the Ravens lost Derrick Anderson, then he became a pro bowler. Now I think he is a duck pin bowler.

If Sylvester is worth anything as a linebacker The Steelers will never be able to sneak him onto the Pittsburgh Pratice Squad; There are just to many other NFL Teams looking for Linebacker depth this season.
If the Steelers need to sneak a player onto their practice squad and Not have a chance of loosing the player; The Pittsburgh Steelers could send their "elite" back-up QB (the one that used to play in Jacksonville) to the pratice squad.
