08:12 AM ET 08.24 | If intent is an indicator, Shaquille O'Neal will play nice from the Celtics' bench. "All players tell you what you want to hear in August," Rivers said in a radio interview. ... When asked if he would come off the Celtics bench, Rivers recalled O'Neal telling him, 'Absolutely coach.' And when asked if playing 10 or 15 minutes per game would suffice, Rivers remembered O'Neal responding, 'Oh yeah, absolutely coach.' Rivers added, "that sounds great in August but when you're actually doing it, it's tough. Especially if you've been a guy with the ball in your hands."

Bad signing imo

Behind Perkins? Yeah right, Shaq! Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it.

August 24, 2010  08:35 AM ET

He's gonna get sick of that real quick

August 24, 2010  08:43 AM ET

Ha its not like starting him and playing only 10-15 mins are going ot make him happy either

Yeah. This was definitely a weird signing.

will you rat me out to the press and destroy the locker room solidarity by crying about wanting to be a stiff for 30 minutes on the court not rebounding or setting picks or defending any kind of motion, pick/roll drives by guards and of course scoring 2 pts a game...Absolutely Coach!

I don't think Doc's afraid of managing Shaq. It's not easy for any coach to sit down a player of Shaq's caliber. Even though he's not as dominant he brings so many intangibles with his size and agility. Shaq's main competitor will be JO. Regardless of how it plays out Shaq needs to change his way of thinking. With the Celts its all about the team... no individual crap.

QUOTE(#12):

Are you people crazy? Shaq can play 15-20 minutes and get you 10 points and 8 rebounds a night and physically bang with anyone. He's Perkins, but with scoring ability. He'll work great on the pick and roll with Rondo. This was a fantastic signing for little money.

But he can't defend the pick and roll. Maybe with Garnet at the four they can cover for him a lil bit but he's a defense liability no doubt...

He will. The goal is to eliminate Miami and possibly set up a date with Kobe. However I don't expect any team to challenge the Lakers this year. The rings is theirs to lose. They don't even have competetion in the West... its sad what Stern has done to this league.

Shaq was once a great NBA player and a future hall of famer. However at this point he is a team killer and a chemistry nightmare. Just ask the Suns and Cav's

August 24, 2010  10:21 AM ET

That's all the league needs, more theatrics in Boston. Hope it will at least be fun to watch.

Is he still not the heaviest in the league? And not because of stuffing his face at buffets like Curry (Ed)... That being said he should still be a night mare to guard when close to the basket 330+lbs, 7'1''?
