Sosa remains bitter at Cubs

08:19 AM ET 08.24 | Now, as Steve Stone put it, "persona non grata," Sammy Sosa believes the Cubs have turned public opinion against him. In 2007, the team handed out his jersey number to another player (pitcher Jason Marquis), signaling that it had no plans to retire it in Sosa's honor. And last year, when Sosa asked the Cubs if he could announce his retirement at Wrigley Field -- his "house," as he used to call it -- the team rejected him. ... He is happy now and does not want controversy. But there is one issue that weighs on him: the state of his relationship with the Cubs and the ugly way it blew apart nearly six years ago -- a sad episode that, he believes, turned public opinion in Chicago decisively against him. "[The Cubs] threw me into the fire," he says. "They made [people] believe I'm a monster."

Have you looked in the mirror lately? You ARE a monster.

August 24, 2010  09:00 AM ET

You got caught on the juice then tried to duck it by forgetting how to speak English, not the classiest of moves and also you were caught corking your bat. You wonder why the Cubs don't have your back?

August 24, 2010  09:24 AM ET

Bad teammate, clubhouse cancer, selfish player and cheater in multiple ways, all yes. Monster, no.

August 24, 2010  09:27 AM ET

Congress should indict him for pretending not to understand their questions when he testified under oath.

August 24, 2010  09:31 AM ET

So lets see, leaving games early, playing loud music in the clubhouse, being a premadonna, using a corked bat, using PED's, forgetting you speak English in front of Congress, nah none of those things could have turned the fans against you.

Man, Sosa still hasn't grown up! Sammie, grow a pair and realize that no one turned Public opinion against you but YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 24, 2010  10:18 AM ET

Maybe they'll retire his number at a grand jury hearing when he's inducted into the Hall of Shame.

Well said, SGB.

Well Sammy, I'm guessing the Rangers won't be giving Palmeiro any honors and it seems the Giants finally wised up about Bonds. You know nobody is going to be handing out Clemens jerseys anytime soon. McGwire apparently got lucky be he is the exception to the rule it seems.

corked bat + steroids ...enough said...

Not defending McGwire, but at least he came clean and admitted what he did before he came back to baseball. Bonds, Clemens and Sammy are all still in complete denial.

McGwire played it smart. Looks like Clemens will be sporting stripes, but not pinstripes. Note to the Rocket...if the Fed can throw Martha Stewart's a/s/s in jail they won't have a problem throwing yours in too. Good luck!!!

How is Roger the only one facing indictment? As Kenosha and Slapshot have alluded-this guy is just as guilty of jerking Congress around. Why ?

i think he looks like a Monster now...he looks like Uncle Finster, doesn't he?

Eric Stoltz from "Mask" comes to mind. With a little more chin.

I think Sammy is not a monster, no, but he did, along with some of his peers (we all know who they are) dishonor the game by taking steroids or hgh or some other performance enhancer. To expect to be honored in baseball after putting yourself before the game is more than humorous.

August 24, 2010  12:40 PM ET

And he corked his bat...the monster...

August 24, 2010  12:53 PM ET

who is Sammy Sosa?

Because Clemens lied under oath, perjury is a crime. Furthmore, Clemens did not have to testify, he demanded that hearing. Good riddance.
