Mets manager hears critics

Manager Willie Randolph has watched the Mets play raggedly, has watched the Philadelphia Phillies crawl closer to first place and has heard the mounting criticism of his subdued managerial style. "If someone said things about your personality that you knew were wrong, how would you feel about it," Randolph said Tuesday. "I hear people say, 'Why didn't you knock over a table' Why are you assuming that I didn't." A defiant Randolph stressed that "I'm the leader of this team" and that he had his "finger on the pulse of my team." Minutes earlier, Randolph, the manager of few team meetings, had a session with the Mets.

The mets are done. HAHHAHAHAHAHA

September 19, 2007  09:12 AM ET

Hopefully they can pull things together in time for the playoffs, but now's the time this team should want to be clicking. Can you imagine if Philly slides in and the Mets are on the outside looking in at the wild card?

September 19, 2007  09:34 AM ET

The wrong man in the wrong job.

September 19, 2007  09:38 AM ET

Aa a met fan Mr Randolph played around with his lineup too much during winning streaks to 'have a look at a guy. Kept bringing Mota in when he is totally ineffective. The mets lost at least 8 games because of this. Last time I checked that is what Triple AAA is for..........

September 19, 2007  09:59 AM ET

Totally agree. I hate to see this but he is not pushing the right buttons. To be fair though who signed these pitchers? Not Willie. Mota and Schowenweiss have been an absolute joke and yet Willie continues to go to these bums. To have no confidence when you have a 4 run lead against a brutal Nationals team shows you how down this group is. How many times are they going to get kicked in the face before they step up? 2 in the loss column.... If this collapse happens, heads will roll. It's going to be ugly.

September 19, 2007  10:38 AM ET

Got to agree with efizzle and jrubzer. This "collapse" has been difficult to watch. Willie needs to do something, and I mean anything, to take control of this team.

September 19, 2007  10:39 AM ET

Well who do the Mets have in their pen? Mota and Schowenweiss have been bad but Heilman and even Wagner haven't earned Willie's trust either. The Phillies are coming on strong so the Mets need to fix things and fast or they may lose the division and even miss the playoffs entirely because the Padres look good too.

September 19, 2007  10:40 AM ET

Unfortuantely though some of the fingers being pointed towards him needs to be pointed towards Omar because Schoenweis and Mota were really awful signings. Also, he knew Pedro and El Duque weren't going to give you all that much over a full season yet he refused to sign a decent starter in the off season. I know some of the salaries the pitchers got were outrageous, but we are still the freakin' Mets with an owner like Wilpon who has deep pockets. If he wants a ring, let him pay for some players.

By Willie

Willie i think your days in new york are up and i could picture la russa takin' over that ball club.

September 19, 2007  11:08 AM ET

Willie's made of teflon. He's going nowhere.

September 19, 2007  11:09 AM ET

The next skipper of the Mets?

Ricky Henderson

September 19, 2007  11:26 AM ET

This stupid. It is not Willy's fault that his pitchers suck. I mean look at them. Their 2 best pitchers are a combined 97 years old. If you can't win a game that you score 8 runs in then you shouldn't be in the playoffs. If the mets don't want Willy there are many teams that do.

September 19, 2007  11:34 AM ET

I blame the GM. I think he wanted a latin allstar team and it didn't matter that many of these guys were over the hill. Now it is blowing up in his face. Pedro is done, bad signing. Orlando Hern??ndez was so done years ago. No one knows he true age and he can't be counted on. This guy could be 50. Carlos Delgado over the hill and showing it. Glavine, how is this guy still pitching? Over the hill, he sux. Wagner is a gas can.

The only players worth anything are Wright and Reyes and Beltran, but not at the price.

September 19, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Willie isn't the one signing these guys so not his fault. He can only use what he has been given to try to win and what he has been given is a joke. He has virtually no bullpen, an old rotation prone to injury, starters who are coming back from surgery. The only move management has made this year is the castillo deal.

September 19, 2007  11:46 AM ET

LastChoice..not fair, but a reality of pro sports.....coaches/managers are PAID to win..when they don't they get the heave ho

September 19, 2007  11:52 AM ET

Willie is not the problem.
Who should the Mets have signed in the off-season? i didn't see alot of value or great moves that could have shorn up that rotation. They were counting on their youth, and Pedro's return to get them through, well that and a powerful lineup. There is still hope.

September 19, 2007  11:55 AM ET

I agree that managers are paid to win, but Willy has done the best job of anyone the Mets have had in a long time. Until now Willy has made this team look and play better then they really are. All of the old guys have been on the DL at one point or another on this team. In this case I say fire the GM, I can not think of one good move he made. They should try and get that guy from the Twins, he has made some sick trades. With Mets payroll that would be insane.

September 19, 2007  11:55 AM ET

The managers is always the first to get the axe sadly. Next is the GM in the firing line. Shame that the owner is the one who directs the GM on which guys to sign yet they never get fired or step down. Case in point was that Randy Johnson and Sheffield were all Steinbrenner's doing but when they flamed out or disrupted the clubhouse it was Cashman's job that people were calling for. Also the Pavano and Jared Wright deals were pushed for heavily by George's Tampa branch but Cashman got hung out to dry when they went bust.

September 19, 2007  11:56 AM ET

Glavine's bull pen has failed him and he should have at least four more wins then he does have. Pedro has been everything the Mets could have wanted and has pitched very well since returning. Again the Mets bullpen has cost him, too. Hernandez, granted is old but man can the guy pitch. Guess what: Bullpen fails again. Anyone noticing a pattern here?
